I’m starting a build thread for my new 500 gallon build.

This tank has been about a year in the making. I had a 200 gallon double deep that recently failed on me, if you have seen my recent posts on other threads… it was every reefer’s nightmare. A seam leaked suddenly and I lost a lot of fish and coral in the process. Needless to say, the timeline for this tank got moved up. Back in the spring of 2020 I ordered this 500 gallon coast to coast customs tank in preparations for upgrading. Fortunately the tank and stand we already built when the other tank failed.

Last week, we completed building the fish room in the garage and today, we finally got the tank and stand in place.

Pics of old tank, new fish, new empty fish room, and new tank.

tank is 8ft x 3ft x 32in soactual dimensions closer to 480 gal.

Omg I can just imagine your call to that company: “hey that tank you’ve been patiently building... gonna need it... tomorrow???”

Did you have the Rubbermaid stock tank already, or was that your emergency go to?

Nice build, thanks for sharing

Hahaha :) no that actually had it built and in storage already! Took them about 6-8 weeks to build but started back in May so it was just in storage ready for me!
The real kicker was “hey remember I need these custom sumps? We need a rush on them big time!” I’m doing a 100g sump with separate fuge and going to have a little narrow lagoon style
Acrylic tank in my fish room ~60g - all made by same company. And they were nice enough to rush it! Delivery today!

Also yes. I had that Rubbermaid stock tank just sitting around in garage actually. I used it to mix salt water before I had my previous mixing station all built. I kept it for a rainy day and it ended up coming in clutch! I decided I’m never getting rid of it lol. It saved a ton of coral, rock and a few small fish.

Sump and sump stand got delayed. Probably won’t be here til next week. Hoping to get rock work done today. Or at least started.
Plumbers coming tomorrow to move this water heater up a floor to make more space in fish room.

Everything look very nice!!! Bravo!

Your fish are BEAUTIFUL also! Im scared to put a Tusk in my tank. Ive always gone with big jumbo hermit crabs over lots of little ones and I've heard a tusk will eat them for a snack!

Thanks! I have not had a tusk before so fingers crossed it works out. If I have to keep adding snails/crabs then so be it lol

First take on rock scape. Probably make a few changes but this will be the main idea. Want to epoxy it solid so will try to remove one of the base rocks to make a ledge. Also want to add an arch near the top.

QUESTION

Already have a good size tang gang in QT and would like to add a clown harem (14 or so) ocellaris.

My question is: I have two ocellaris clowns that I’ve had for almost 3 years. They’re still kicking in my holding tank awaiting the new big home.

Should I add the 14 young clowns from same clutch, then wait a few weeks to introduce my older two? All at the same time?

I cross posted this in fish discussion thread as well. Hopefully somebody has had experience in this.

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

my personal experience is that the 2, will bully any other ones in the tank.

I have 4 in my tank 2 Snowflakes (10 year old mated pair), 1 Black Ice and one Platinum. My original snowflake pair let a single Black Ice clown share the anemone with them. The Platinum clown is 6 feet away and once a hour, my Female Snowflake will leave the anemone and go pester the Platinum. Im waiting for the day that they turn on the Black Ice and give him a black eye......

Thanks. There’s enough variables here I might cancel the harem or just wait a while and see how the tank fills out before I decide.

I think the harem is fine and actually very cool, I just would do both the harem and the pair.
Thanks. I’m still considering it...
Just gonna put it on back burner for a little while. Still planning to keep my old clowns separate for time being.

Update on rockwork. Rearranged a few pieces and created some different shelves and caves. Used an epoxy fro Marco and so far so good, holding up nicely. Let’s hear your thoughts?!
