I have primary West Mariculture bonsai reef in my tank with few Caribsea caves for the fish to hide
Overall I'm happy with it but seeing others doing some great scapes with Marco rocks makes re-think sometimes ... maybe on the next build

This was my 2008 tank on day 30 and on day 90. Mainly dry coral.... I really do wish to find this kind of rock again!
It was easy to lodge rocks into one-another and not use adhesives! Also frags could be lodged instead of glued!
I really love it!

My rock is basically bare rock from shallow reefs which I brought back home during one of my trips to our local islands, bleached it and put it in my tank. Love the nooks and crannies and the shapes!

To be honest I don't have a saltwater tank. Just a 10 gallon betta tank. I live in an apartment. But I'm curoius and living through you all right now.
I have a 5 gallon betta tank next to my desk. I have live rock in there... two rocks actually. It gives her shelter. There is a little algae on them, but not bad. All I run on that tank is carbon and I have never done a water change. It's a Fluval Chi... happy fish.

Very nice tank! What are the dimensions and what is the brand? Or is it custom built?

started my tank in Feb2021, I used marco rock glued with jurassic gel over a pvc frame, I then added tonga branches to create bridges, and archways. I found some live rock that was pretty clean, and added to my 20 gallon refugium ..

don't mind the algae, its going through new tank syndrome. po4 is at .10 ppm

The reason I have any rock in the tank at all is to build the aquascape. Consensus is that real live rock, not cured, is best for setting up a new tank due to the bacteria and other life it brings to the table. But, for biological filtration, I.e. the nitrogen cycle, other alternatives are just as effective and is easier to manage.

The rock I have in the tank is what I've picked up from the beach across from my house. Most of it sat outside in the sun for months, so not really live, but at least real, and a lot cheaper than anything I could have purchased.

I rely on poret foam in my sump to process ammonia. Formulas are available to calculate the amount needed based on the fish load, and its really not that much.

So, I will not go rockless, but I will concentrate on rockscape.

First, I’m happy to see at least there’s more environmental considerations today on the sale of rock. Like others I feel the best rock was the Fiji back in late 90s/early 2000s. However, it was devastating to the local reefs. When I set up a tank I hunt down old rock. I look for pourous. The man made stuff doesn’t seem to have the micro pores that reef rock does, and can’t host as much beneficial bacteria. Preference is dry rock so no pests. But sometimes you can find good live rock well established from a tank breakdown. It’s nice to be able to get a tank up quickly. When using dry rock I’d get a few cups of sand from an established tank or even tank water from a water change. There’s tons of bacteria to start the cycle.

Let's rock and roll! :p
Sub Pop Yes GIF by Sub Pop Records

No really, let's talk about ROCK! More specifically the rock we have in our saltwater reef aquariums that make up our beautiful aquascapes!

1. What type of rock do you have in your reef tank?

2. What do you like or dislike about it?
(NOT YOUR AQUASCAPE but the actual rock)

You get a BIG THUMBS UP for sharing a photo of your ROCK!

It’s mostly 15 year old Tampabay Saltwater aquacultured live rock I love it! This is only part of it. Doing a mini cook getting ready for it’s new home.

For my new build, I used 100% Caribsea Liferock Shapes. I used a mix of mega arches and caves. I love that I didn't have to work hard for scaping and I didn't have to arrange a million rocks. I don't love that it doesn't look as natural as my arrangement in my old reefer 350. The wide arches leave a lot of open space, so I may end up adding more regular rock at the base for more hiding spots.

I like the look but not the life, that is, no matter what I do, I was still finding hitchhikers years into that system, one being a Bobit. What a PITA.

This current system I just used the Carbi-Sea purple dry rock and a bottle of Fritz 9 and in a few days, we had the “look” of coralline, without any extras.

I prefer to add my own mix of biodiversity.

In the end, I really don’t see the rock anymore.
