Hedgedrew: Do you go on vacation? I know you said you have staff to care for tanks but where could be better to be than with your tanks?!!
We left ours this year for Mexico and had a 20yr old girl stay at the house with the pets and tanks. We monitored reef with apex. But luckily everything went well and no losses. We travel at least once a year if not twice but is always hard to leave the tanks. Our LFS owner has always agreed to be on backup call in case of emergency when we travel. Which is awesome!
Do you have a generator for system? You may have already commented on this. For Christmas I bought the fish and my husband a small generator just for the three tanks. You never know with Wisconsin weather!

Oh he definitely has a generator lol, 2 HUGE ones I saw. Refer to post #130 on page 7.
I figured! I think I saw that page but forgot. Do most people have generators? We didn’t when we did not for five years and have been lucky. Had battery back up for small tank but can’t do that with two 300gal tanks. The generator I got will only do essentials like heaters and return pumps and nothing for the house. But I have a small budget!

Those are my generators. Yes we have staff in house for all 4 dogs too. I go away often but quickly becoming a homebody.
Impressive set up! You have all bases covered it seems! I can definitely see why being a homebody is appealing with your awesome tanks! Will the new tank go in the main house or near the big tank?

Sorry to hear that. It’s awful to loose all the livestock and all the work that goes into our tanks. With your present system and livestock an outage could be devastating even if you have money to replace to go without a generator would be way too risky! NY does not have kind weather either. We’ve been lucky. I bet the power company loves you too! Our Wisconsin company called us because of high electrical usage and sent out a specialist to evaluate our home. When he saw the tanks he said it all made sense! We did have an electrician come to the house to divide the tanks onto their own breakers which I think has prevented some issues for us. I think our home made sumps and crazy wires Would drive your perfectionist side crazy!!! My husband has hand build his own sumps out of old tanks which are not pretty but cost effective and functional! The money we saved on sumps allows us to pay the house sitter! Lol

I’m an Icu nurse and getting my masters degree so I only work Friday, Saturday, Sunday and I study and do my school work in front of the tanks all day During the week! Tanks are upstairs and my office is in the basement but I prefer to work where I can see the tanks!!! And definitely enjoying being a forced homebody!

That’s super cool! Nursing is a wonderful profession with so many options and I love it! ICU is the most labor intensive area of nursing which is why I’m getting my masters degree. Your daughter has chosen well! Tell her to look into ICU nursing if she hasn’t already selected an area she loves. ICU nurses are constantly making decisions, autonomous and an integral part of patient care! I can’t image doing anything else with my life and Nursing has given us enough income to enjoy our lives as well. Columbia is a great school. I attended a neuroscience conference put on by Columbia about seven years ago in NY city. Good for her!
