How long have you had him and what do you feed him? How often do you feed him and how long has it been since he has eaten?

A much darker color can be a defensive/aggressive indicator, is anyone in the tank bothering him?

Lions do actually do better being fed a couple times a week vs daily, every other day at most. Skipping a meal here or there is no big deal and I wouldn't get overly concerned unless it turned into a couple of weeks.

I got a better sight of your pic, and that's the classic color of being p'd off. The urchin was probably in his spot and he got stuck.
