I have been culturing Phyto and Pods for years and selling it here on R2R. Here is a link to my older thread https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/fresh-live-phyto-8-species-blend-–-free-shipping.796578/ I am hoping that this new thread will simplify things a little. I also have a website at https://reefplantation.com/. I had my first saltwater tank in the 70's and my first reef tank in the early 2000's. I'm happy to offer any help I can, so please feel free to post any questions.

Fresh LIVE Phyto 8-Species Blend

I have been culturing phytoplankton for years and I like to think that I have the best, highest quality live phyto available at any price.

I culture several different species of phytoplankton 2-3 species of Tetraselmis, Nannochloropsis, 2-3 species of Isochrysis, Thalassiosira weissflogii (diatom), Nannochloris, Chaetoceros (diatom), Chlorella, Dunaliella, Porphyridium, and Pavlova separately and then combine them at harvest to insure that all species are present - if cultured together, one will eventually eliminate the others. There are slight variations week to week (there are actually more than 8 species), but this blend has green, brown, red, and gold phyto including diatoms with sizes from 1 micron to 14 microns. Some are motile, and some are not. They all have different nutritional profiles. In short, this blend should provide feed for all of the various microorganisms and filter-feeders in your tank.

I start with fresh, sterilized artificial saltwater made with RO water (usually Instant Ocean) and culture each species separately with F/2 fertilizer. I grow them in small cultures and inspect with a microscope to insure the highest quality. I grow the cultures to maximum density so that you get the most phyto for your money. Everything is kept clean and sterile and monitored closely (including microscopically) so that you receive the highest quality live phyto.

Three-Species Mix - Tigriopus, Tisbe, and Apocyclops

I culture each of these species separately and then mix them when they are harvested. I feed them my Live Phyto Blend, so they are very healthy and nutritious.

If you would like a single species, add $1 per bottle. I culture them separately, but I am not extremely careful about preventing some cross-contamination. So, there will likely be a few stragglers of other species even if you order a single species.

ROTIFERS
These are Brachionus plicatilis (L-type) rotifers. Fed with my 8-species blend of phytoplankton for maximum health and nutrition. They are also shipped with a good dose of phyto, so they are gut-loaded with good nutrition right out of the bag. I ship them in bags with pure oxygen in order to maximize survival. There are about 40,000 rotifers in each 32oz.

"F/2" Fertilizer

I also have F/2 fertilizer available. It's more concentrated than most - 1ml will treat 2.5 liters of water. $12.00 for 8oz bottle.

Hello, I am pretty new to reef and saltwater in general but my tank started in october and I just started getting small brown spots which are most likely diatoms. Someone recommended I get galaxypods but I came across you which seems pretty trustable and way better prices compared to algaebarn. How should I order from you, like is on R2R or your website better? And What do I need to turn off such as things like skimmer etc. I have a 30 gallon 3ft tank and how much copepods should I get?

Hello! Thanks for your interest. Either way of ordering works fine for me. If you go to ReefPlantation.com, it's real easy to place an order (use the code PlainBottle to save a buck on each bottle). Or, you can PM your PayPal email to me and I will send you an invoice. Either way, I ship on Tuesdays, and you will receive an email with the tracking number before that.

If you have good conditions and especially if you dose phyto, the pods will get established in your tank - as long as there isn't too much predation. So, a small bottle would be enough to get them going. Since you are hoping to minimize the diatoms, it would probably be good to jump start the process by adding more - one or two large bottles.

I would definitely recommend adding the pods in the dark, and it would be a good idea to turn of the skimmer for 20-30 minutes.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

I have 2 clowns pretty small and a fire goby, can you check out my post on my profile and see if that is diatoms?

I don't consider myself an expert, but that looks like it could definitely be diatoms. It also looks a little like the beginnings of some kind of photosynthetic slime algae I am dealing with in a new system I have. I haven't ever seen this algae before though, so diatoms is probably a better bet...
