@Dinkins Aquatic Gardens, I have a question. I have read in multiple places that phyto will increase phosphates; they're talking about DEAD phyto, correct?

Yes, generally speaking. I always say that when you add dead phyto, it starts decaying right away. Adding live phyto, however, will immediately cause your NO3 + PO4 to go down, as the live phyto eats those nutrients.

Of course, aquariums are closed ecosystems, so once your coral or pods eat that phyto, some of the nutrients will be used to make the organism grow, and the rest will be excreted into your water column. On the flip side, some have argued vehemently that adding live phyto makes enough changes in the ecosystem that the net result is a drop in phosphates.
