I just got a New Bucket of Salt.

Everytime I get a New Bucket I Check all the Parameters of the Newly Mixed Salt Water to Make Sure Nothing is Out of the Ordinary.

But this time this is what I got.

Salinity 1.026
Alkalinity 8.6
Calcium 460
Magnesium 1860

The High Magnesium Really Concerns Me.

I just talked to a guy that told me all his Corals were Dying.

He said his Magnesium was like 2200 or 2400 though.

Is this Safe to Use?

Another Thing that worries me is if the Magnesium is High What Else Might be High?

I read somewhere that they put Copper in the Salt (I have no Idea why since it Kills Corals).

What if in Addition to Magnesium I have High Copper and all My Corals Die?

The Salt is Tropic Marin Pro.

I Switched to this Salt because Reef Crystals Parameters were all Over the Place and TMP is one of the Most Stable Salts Out There.

I have used 10 Buckets Now and have never had a Problem with Tropic Marin Pro.

I Keep my Magnesium at 1440

I do Large Water Changes (Around 60 to 70 Percent).

I made 4 Buckets of Saltwater and have Tested all 4 Buckets and Used 2 Different Salifert Test Kits.

All 8 Tests came back over 1800

with that large of a water change you could have an issue, if they were smaller it won't be as much of a problem. Id try contacting tropic marine and see what they say

Tropic Marin Pro
Did you mix the bucket of salt well before putting it in water? I used TMP and find that if you do not mix the bucket well then the readings are sometime way out.

I do not mix the bucket because the One Time I did mix it Alkalinity was All Over the Place.

Unlike Most Salts Tropic Marin Pro is Packed Tight in a Bag and Sealed so it Doesn't move around.

You Typically get a 3 to 1 Ratio Magnesium to Calcium.

So since my Magnesium is off (1830) I feel my Calcium (460) and Alkalinity (8.6) should be off too but they are not.

If Calcium was 610 and Alkalinity 12 then I would think yeah I should Mix the Bucket.

So I am thinking my Whole Bucket has High Magnesium Whether I Mix it or Not.

Do you guys Agree with that or no?

Yes I know TMP comes in a tight sealed bag, but your Mg is only off that indicates that possibly either its a bad salt or possibly you can mix the bag once and check the Mg to know if there a uneven distribution of elements across the bag....just try once and then we can think something else....just takes a minute out of your busy schedule......just mix well

There are no salt mixes that cause lethality even with the variances we show among them. awr you could have a bad batch, but I think that is too uncommon for it to be the pinned reason for lots of things online.

that guy who found a fishhook=bad batch

all the rage w triton is showing vast lithium variations too, who knows what mine is, likely sky high. making impact conclusions is hard imo.

I vote just proceed, that salt has a large following and so does reefcrystals, which again has varying levels of params and still doesn't mix up lethally out of the box. acceptable variation among salts is my call, and test kit variation cannot be ruled out, threads show comparisons among kits to range.

I have gone through two 200g containers of Tropic Marin Pro salt in the past year or so. My Mg (usually ~1100) and alkalinity (usually 7-7.5) are reliably low every time I make a new batch of water so I need to supplement with MgCl2 and baking soda. Irritating but at least no brown residue....

Me too......generally its known as low Mg and high potassium content salt and that is why this sounds weird..
