About a year ago I purchased a male lyretail anthias from Petco. Over time, as expected, he (she?) has lost his dorsal spike and coloration and is now presenting as a female with the bright orange coloring. We upgraded our tank to a 75g a few months ago and I am thinking of getting him a friend. I am trying to decide between buying a male with full coloring or a female - I know if I buy a female, one or the other will at some point transition to male. However I am considering buying a male just so I can ensure the pretty bright red coloring. If I buy a male, am I asking for trouble buy putting him with a lone anthias who *used to* be male? Also, if I QT the male alone for a month is he just going to lose his color before he even gets a chance to enter the display?

Thanks!

I would just get a smaller female so the bigger one will transition back without the smaller one putting up much of a fight.
