While I have never heard of using cola, I do know coke can be used for "cleaning" things(like a seized motor!). I used to use vinegar, but read it can cause magnets to become exposed to salt water causing them to expand, rust, and leech into our tanks.

I have since switched to citric acid.

Cola is acidic so it can be used to remove scale from pumps. So can pool acid. I drink the cola and clean pumps with dilute pool acid. Vinegar isn't good, and I am not certain that Cola would not have similar issues?

It has phosphoric and citric acid. There's all kinds of "20 things you can clean with cola" articles if you try Google. Doesn't seem cost effective and might get sticky, but I guess it could work.
