I’m new to modern day reefing.

38 years ago I had a 29 gallon show tank. Had it back when I was in high school. Was so easy to take care of. Had a little glass hydrometer to monitor temp and specific gravity. Barely did anything to the tank and had long living moray, lion fish and cow fish along with a horseshoe crab.

March 26 of this year my wife purchased me a new AquaTop Recife ECO 40 gallon tank. Initial setup went smooth mixing the salt, adding live sand and started with dry rock and 1 piece of ‘live’ rock.

Live rock today is a lot different from live rock back in the day. Rock purchased 38 years ago was full of life…today it was wet rock.

Anyway, I started things off the old fashion way, tossed in a watchman goby and clown and let it cycle. Quickly learned that that is no longer the way to start a cycle. Lfs did not even mention the additives that can start the cycle when I bought the fish.

The stock light…well, to be polite was a bare bone light with no controls other than on and off. Wanting to keep the tank on a set schedule I upgraded to a AI Prime 16hd. I played with it for a few days and quickly adapted towards Saxby’s settings, just added 2% blues at night for a slight night light.

Thats when the fun started. I had an algae bloom most likely the result of a better light. Kept reading that diatoms are a normal part of a new setup. Let it run its course. But it quickly changed from brownish sand to reddish color film covering sand, rock, even corals.

Tested my tap water and its disgusting! Tap water is NOT the best source to mix your salt with. Purchased a 4 stage RODI system. Blew off as much of the red as I could and did a massive water change. Red algae came right back. Every day I was cleaning off my rocks, corals and stirring up the sand bed.

The stock tank only had a return pump, so reading about how water movement is key to a successful tank so added 2 wave makers. The red algae was starting to slow, but had to be cleaned off daily. Then found out it was Red Cyano I was dealing with. One course of chemiclean and within 2 days it’s all gone. My fish and corals had no ill effects from the chemiclean. Only my anemone is not looking happy.

But left behind are a dozen or so small green patches in the sand, but the rocks are clean. Hmm, now I have Bryopsis. Ordered Reef Flux. Comes in on Tuesday. Hopefully it will clear the Bryopsis and I will have a clean tank once again.

My parameters have stayed constant other than ph:

ph - 7.8 to 8.2
amonia - .25
nitrite - 0
nitrate - 10
calcium - 340
kh - 14
phos - .25
magnesium - 1290
salinity - 1.024

I am having ph swings. I add Reef Buffer to bring the PH back up to 8.2, but it drops down to 7.8 by the next day.

Ammonia has never been at zero. Tested my RODI water and it tests positive for ammonia. Checked with my water company and we do have chloramine in our water. The chloramine is not being removed by the RODI system. I do use a water conditioner that is supposed to eliminate chloramine.

I’ll update as I treat with the Reef Flux in a few days.

I’m not sure my rock structure is tall enough, I was thinking of lifting my top rock and putting another rock under it to get what will become my SPS rock higher in the tank.

I attached a few photos March 28, May 16, June 2 (cyano), July 2 (bryopsis)

nice

I think if you let your tank run its course without altering its bio chemistry with chemicals it will turn out just fine.

Last month I caught 2 hermit crabs swapping shells, I actually caught 3 crabs swap 4 times. Was in awe for the 1st swap and didn't think the 1st one would come back around the tank and snag a shell left behind just moments earlier:

Don't mind the diatoms/red cyano in the video, they have been taken care of.

When the first hermit crab popped out of her shell, she had a string of eggs attached to her. They were bright red. So should be just about time to hatch. I'm pretty sure they will all become snacks for my green spotted mandarin and yellow banded possum wrasse.

Late last night my largest hermit crab pinned the female with eggs down for at least 4 hours. I recorded a 20 second snippet of it:

This morning my largest pinned another crab down for hours.

Is this normal behavior for hermit crabs?

It’s been a week since adding Reef Flux to my tank. Bryopsis is next to gone. I have 2 small patches that have lost color and 80+% of size on two rocks. The sand bed is free of all visible Bryopsis.

My ammonia is now .5 and nitrates are now at 10.

I have what looks to be loose algae on a few rocks that I didn’t even notice had it.

My anemone so far is the only thing in the tank not looking happy. Since the day I added the Reef Flux he has moved around and looked all shriveled up. Hopefully I don’t loose him.

But very happy with the results thus far. I am getting am getting diatoms on the sand, and I glass was covered when I came home from a trip last night.

Check out the last photo…my emerald crab was going for a ride with my turbo snail.

Nice!

How do you like the aio system? Any plans/mods in the future?
So far I’m loving it pretty simple set up, Ordered https://www.reef2reef.com/members/neffly4u.169322/
this guys media basket looks like people like it So I’ll give it a try.
I want to upgrade the pump but not sure what will fit don’t mind a little modification either. And when I’m ready for coral also want xr30 pro led light because I know I will upgrade within the yr.

How do I properly adjust a skimmer?

My AquaTop Recife 40’s skimmer had no instructions, so I’m really not sure what the recommended height is.

Once I have the height set, should I be raising and lowering it to keep getting skim mate?

basically, I do a water change, that day my skimmer is set really high or the cup fills with clear liquid. Then I start lowering it over the week until the next change. I don’t think this is right.

right now I am getting nothing. The water is just bubbling about 3” up the tube.

I just added a Fluval 406 canister to the tank. I’m setting up a tank to grow some additional corals and wanted to jump start the cycle.

Tank update:

I am really happy with my tank right now. Back in mid September my skimmer stopped skimming. For a few days I was trying to get it going and nothing. And then all my parameters just leveled off, ammonia zeroed out and nitrates dropped.

I started seeing growth on all my corals (except my Ricordea).

I decided to remove all the media out of my back chamber. I still use the stock sponge in the first section, but the bottom two media baskets are now full of Matrix. The top two media baskets have been removed for now.

My pistol shrimp hasn’t been seen until this week when he paired with my watchman goby. Now he comes fully out and runs around dragging dirty sand from one area into his hole and then comes back out for more.

I noticed last night my frammer now has three mouths. Right now it looks like this.

Is it splitting? ticked off my clown dive rolls into it?

I upped my feedings to three small meals of pellets a day, it’s all gone before it leaves the surface. Twice a week they get mysis and the corals get spot fed once a week.

I missed cleaning day, so the tank is calling.

I’m now 11 months in, I’ve had moments of frustration, but my tank is actually coming together.

Still have diatoms and a little red cyano, but all my levels are leveling off with no drastic changes for quite some time. Just two weeks ago my nitrates tested zero for the first time since setup.

Biggest frustration lately has been with the hyger auto top off. It had a habit of overfilling my tank and setting the alarm off, then it wasn’t filling the tank at all. I had the sensor in my return pump section, which is also where my kalkwasser goes. It was leaving a film on the glass so the sensor wasn’t reading correctly. Moved the sensor to the display side where it probably belonged to start with and problems solved for now.

here’s a few pics

my only new equipment is a Jabeo DCW-1500 Sine DC Pump. The stock pump rated at 475 gph was way too weak. The new pump is at its lowest setting and still too strong. 3d printed a new smaller diameter uplift tube to restrict flow a little.

some more pics from today.

Moved and had to break my tank down for a week. Moved my foundation rocks to a new tank to seed it. Decided to keep the rocks more central with a cave under and thru the rock.

I only have an engineer goby in the tank at the moment. Just placed an order with reefcleaners.org for a cuc package. Local shops just can’t seem to get them in.
