Let’s just start by saying this is a total facepalm moment… I listened to advice in an LFS instead of following the 6 months of research I had done previously.

I picked up a yellow tang from Biota last weekend and when I went to the LFS to get a new skimmer for Black Friday, they had a gorgeous melanarus wrasse and Red Sea Sailfin that I couldn’t take my eyes off of. I was assured that the three fish would be fine in the 150gal for at least a few years with my clowns and watchman goby since both of the tangs were only about 1.5”.

I just setup my first quarantine system (40 gal) and thought I’d add some of my cycled ceramic media into the quarantine tank so ammonia might not build as fast. In the first 2 days, the sailfin was picking at the fins of the wrasse and yellow. I put the sailfin in a quarantine box inside the tank until I can figure out how to fix this mistake. None of the fish are exhibiting signs of marine disease, but the wrasse has chewed up pectoral fins now and the yellow has a little bite out of his dorsal fin.

If that weren’t enough, I put the ceramic media back into the sump of my display tank while I moved things around to catch the sailfin.

With all that said, I’m looking for advice on what to do next…. Finish quarantine and sell the sailfin once surely healthy? Divide the QT tank and place all three in the display until the tangs outgrow? Though I know the tang police will potentially come in full force, I brought this on myself…

Also, did I just potentially introduce disease to my display tank since I put that media back in the sump?

Thank you for your time!

Qt media into the DT exposed the DT to the microbes in the qt.

Just keep watching the qt, and now also the DT for possible outbreaks of disease. If the Tanks stay clean for a few weeks then I think you dodged a plague bullet.

If disease breaks out then you can decide what to do next.

I love my UV and I need to purchase a new bulb. Thanks for the reminder.

Thanks for the feedback! Will the UV rid me of that problem? If so, do you have one you recommend in particular?
