hello

Ive received a frag of the plating montipora capricornis. It was nice and red and now its losing its color.

Where do I need to place it? Right now, its on the top of the tank with pretty much light and decent flow.

Any suggestions?

Mine is about a third of the way down in an area of decent flow. The tank is about two feet deep. The lights are about four inches from the surface of the water. So the monti cap is about 10 inches from the lights. I use LEDs. I've had this coral since mid May, so 5 months, and it is growing rapidly and beautifully. Started as a small sliver and now already has enormous plates with multiple layers forming. I'll try to take pictures this afternoon.

What are your tanks parameters? I have monti cap at the top of my tank near my acropora and they've done fine, they're usually a fairly hardy coral IME.

I asked for parameters because if nitrate or phosphate are either 0 then it can be hard on corals and cause them to basically starve. Having either at 0 is also asking for issues with dinos.

If your phosphate is actually 0 then I would start with raising it a little.

well…
my parameters yesterday:

ca: 430
kh: 7.7
sal: 1.024
po4: 0
no3: 2
temp: 24,5 degrees celsius

i gotta measure the parameters again in 2 hours.

The other corals look good so far…
Not sure what it is.. but yeah.. i thought maybe too much light.. my ai prime is about 10“ from the surface and is running 115%.

What test kit are you using to test phosphate? If it truly is 0 then you should try to raise it. When you raise it there is a good chance your nitrates will drop a little so make sure you don't raise phosphates and bottom nitrates out.

I had a red one in my QT that also went from deep red to a light pink. Was about 10” from the lights. Moved It down and in a couple of weeks was back to deep red.

well.. I suppose its the low nutrient levels for sure.. my hammer also doesnt open due to low po4 i‘d say.

I ordered ATI Phosphor and Nitrate to raise both manually.

Furthermore I gotta say tank is now 20 days old.. and all other parameters are good. Ive got some ugly algea on the glass (tank looks cloudy) but its only because the glass is ugly.

I will feed more and order cleaner shrimps (poo) and a salaris fasciatus for algae.

I think i dont move the monti.. pocillos look all pretty nice

kh: 7.3
po4: 0
no3: 0.2
calc: 420

Monti caps are fairly hardy as far as sps go but I still wouldn't recommend them for a tank as young as yours.
I can tell you that when my nitrates were 0 I killed quite a few frags because I didn't realize corals needed nitrates and phosphates to survive.

well.. I know, the frag was for free since the reefer shut down his tank and this was some sort of a frag left in the tank.

My Pocillos work pretty well, and in 1-2 days I will start dosing phosphat and nitrate.
