Will have to give this a try but the initial cost is pretty high if it doesn't work at $125/500g on Amazon. But glad you looked into it. I may give it a shot after I run out of AcroPower.

I’d see if aminos work in your tank with a bottle of commercial product. I they work, buy the powder and you’ll realize the immense savings;)

Acropower works great and is inexpensive, just use liberally, if you start seeing an excess of algae then you dosed to much

Any updates. For those with large tanks dosing aminos can become very costly

I’m still having great results from my DIY aminos. My current recipe is 125 mL Vodka, 375 mL RO water, 10 grams amino acid powder, with 1/2 teaspoon sodium hydroxide. It dissolves well and doesn’t grow anything when store at room temperature.

The vodka acts as a preservative and the sodium hydroxide helps to completely dissolve the amino acid mix.

Given the fact that you are using vodka in this could you class it as a form of carbon dosing. Are you still using the same formula or have you made any further alterations?

My current recipe is:
100 mL vodka
400 mL R/O water
10 grams of amino acids
1/2 tsp. Sodium Hydroxide (handle powder with care)

It dissolves well and looks shelf stable.

The vodka is a bit of a carbon source, so keep that in mind.

Are you using this daily as some of the more well known brands recommend to do with their AA products?

Never tried it. I don’t think you can go wrong with any brand of amino acids. They all utilize the same amino acids, they just vary in strength and ratios of the different aminos...I presume. And, of course, price.
