Hey folks, I have had a JBJ 30RL for something like a year now. An amazing deal popped up on a 45 so I grabbed it and swapped everything over. Now that I have some more water to play with I wanted to add some more fish to my bio load. So far what I have from the 30 is the obligatory pair of clowns, a tiny neon goby, a yellow prawn goby, royal gramma, coral beauty, cleaner shrimp, and pistol shrimp, small cleanup crew.

I would like to add the following 3 blue reef chromis, 2 firefish, and a nice fairy wrasse.

I only have 2 small corals right now but would like to add quite a bit in the future.

My 30 was running like a well oiled machine. I had 2 upgraded media baskets with the following large pore sponge on top, to small pore sponge, to filter floss in the top basket, and the other 2 sections filled with pumice, I took out the 2 small pumps and put in a single larger 66o gph pump which drove the returns and also split to run down to my cheato reactor. I had a skimmer in the main chamber, but took it offline cuz the cheato cleaned out everything. My only maintenance was rinsing sponges, changing filter floss, and trimming cheato....no water changes needed.

Anyway, I feel like the bigger tank should be able to handle the new load, but would like opinions. I can always fire the skimmer back up if needed. If I add 6 more fish will it limit the amount of coral I can add? I do plan on starting to dose at least kalk, if not 2 or 3 part to start to get ready for coral.

6 fish is too much imo.
I would leave out the firefish and the chromis and stock it up with more coral.

Before you start dosing you need to test what you # are and find out what your consumption is from ALK, CAL and MAG.
Imo once a week a water change will keep those in check as you have only a few corals.

Yes I have tested a few times, the numbers are stable but low. I know I have alot of calculating to do, but I have been moving very slow in the hobby so far...trying to be as "safe" as possible.

I think if add the Skimmer back in you would be fine. I have the JBJ myself
But I also have a external sump as well. But I have as many fish and many Corals. Below is my tank and Corals, hmm only half the tank

Salinity 1.026
Ammonia 0
Nitrites 0
Nitrate 0
Phosphate 0
DKH 9
Ca 400
PH 7.8 to 8.0 (this is the hardest test for my eyes to read)
This is all with API so obviously Phosphates may be there in trace amounts.

I haven't test Mg in awhile, but if memory serves it was in the high 600's with a salifert test.

Sweet little tank.
Thank you....although you will have to excuse the fake plants....lol. I had to put them in for some color to satisfy the better half till I get some real colors in there with the coral.

Not bad on your # but I can tell you this that if you get some better test kits your # will be different.
600 is super low for mg, I think you meant to type 1600.

Testing error or your API test is expired.

Nice upgrade. Seems like you have enough fish for a 45 already in my opinion. For example, my JBJ 45 Flat Panel will have 3-4 fish. About 11” worth total (not that I use any inch per gallon rule, but just for perspective). I have a 1” fish and 3 shrimp in there now and it already is feeling small to me. All just my opinion of course, and it does depend on the fish’s behaviors in addition to the bioload.
