Hello Ladies and Gentleman,

My name is Corina, I live in London and I’m new to the hobby!

I recently (December 2022) purchased a Red Sea max nano peninsula (100L) with plans to start a coral reef & fish tank.

l'll be showcasing my journey in the hope that you can help/guide me & a few of my highs and inevitable lows along the way will help some of you with your own tanks and together we can share thoughts and ideas in an attempt to make our salty world a better place!

For now though, heres a list of my setup!!

  • Red Sea Max Nano
  • Red Sea Cabinet (modified with home made shelving unit)
  • Sera 200W Thermostat Heater
  • Red Sea Surface skimmer
  • Red Sea’s NANO protein skimmer
  • Red Sea Circulation pump
  • Red Sea auto top off 1.5 litres
  • Micron filter bag
  • Red Sea carbon bag
  • Red Sea’s ReefLED 50 light
Live rock
CaribSea Arag-Alive Fiji Pink Live Sand

Parameter Testing Kit:
  • Salifert ammonia test kit
  • Salifert nitrite test kit
  • Hanna marine HR Nitrate
  • Hanna marine alkalinity dkh
  • Hanna marine phosphorus ULR
  • AUTOUTLET Salinity Refractometer

Current Tenants in the Tank:

Fish
Clownfish – female ×1
Clownfish – male/juvenile ×1
Royal gramma
Clean Up Crew
Shrimp
Blood red shrimp

Live stock plans:

Goby & Pistol Shrimp - I really like the idea of this pair.

But in the same time I’m really thinking about an sand sifting Diamond Goby. (Well see)

Anemone - not sure what kind yet
Torch Coral- I love them
(But these in time after my tank is mire established.)

Soft corals - circus bounce mushroom (my partner likes the look of them)

Some Zoas .. I think they are perfect for me as a beginner.

Future plans:
Digital temp controller

More live rock- want to get some small piece of live rock to add to the sand bed

ATO - The manual says that the ATO should last 3 days but it's currently only lasting 2.

Open to suggestions or to see what others have done for ATO in thier Max Nano
As well I will love some suggestions on Lighting set up. ( at the moment I’m using the one suggested from their library)

Automatic feeder for my planned vacations.

Auto dosing, not necessary right now but I am really curious if you have any suggestions.

I was looking at Aqua Medic Reefdoser EVO 4 FOUR CHANNEL DOSING PUMP.

Few thoughts;

When I started this hobby, my research was 0. And it was so overwhelming for me with so many different opinions.

From the moment I bought the tank in every night from 20:00 to 5 o’clock in a morning I was just reading and watching videos on YouTube (thanks BRS TV) about saltwater tanks [my poor man, was dreaming about this :)) ]

So here are few bits from my research which I think will be helpful for a beginner, like me with 0 research but much more hope and enthusiasm.
(trust me I was getting mad trying to figure out all of this)

( If I am wrong please don’t hesitate to correct me)

Best:
Salinity: 1.026
Temperature: 25.6
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0 (25ppm nitrite is known to cause damage in one study on clownfish.)
Nitrate: 2-15ppm (5 is ideal)
Phosphate should be between 0.03-0.1 ( 03 - .10 ppm ) on average
Alkalinity: target 8-8.5
Magnesium: 1400-1450 range
Calcium 420-440 ppm

Alkalinity test, weekly
Calcium every other week

Good to know
Great sources of nutrition for your torch can come from meaty foods such as PE Mysis, Fauna Marin LPS pellets and easily digestible powdered coral food such as Benefits.
Filter bag can be rinsed in tap water
One key fact to understand about calcium and alkalinity is that if one level is out of range, the other will move in the opposite direction.
ALK you don't raise more than 1 dKh per day. CALC and MAG you can raise to whatever levels you wish within a day.
No3 & phosphate high? Feed less

Ideal water parameters for corals:
  • Ammonia: 0 ppm
  • Nitrite: 0 ppm
  • pH: 8.2-8.4
  • Nitrate: <10 ppm

That’s it for now! Thanks for checking it out. Let me know what you think and I’ll keep you posted on the progress!
