I visited Aquatica in San Marcos this weekend and was very impressed. Exceptionally clean facility and the owner Dave was informative and helpful. Probably will be my go to shop. He sources from Quality Marine and all his tanks looked very well kept and disease free. Unlike almost every other store I visited.

Was just there the other day--10 minutes from my house. Dave & crew are great!

I’m a data geek so I find it very comforting to have access to my tank conditions remotely.

My wife was correct months ago when an employee at an LFS was showing us his Apex Fusion app and she stated, “Oh, he’s going to get that for sure!”

I, of course, denied my lust for one. Secretly knowing she had me figured out all too well.
23+ years will do that :)

So I picked up a used Apex from a local reefer for a great deal. Thanks Gabriel! (if you ever see this)

Now I’m on a mission to mount it and make it look snazzy!

Found a TINY aiptasia on a snail this morning. Pulled the snail and superglued the aiptasia And put the snail back afterward.

I also pulled a couple rocks that were too close to my back wall.

I realize I had, at a minimum, 2 bristleworms. 1 was in the rock I pulled along with a tiny brittle star. I couldnt save them so the rocks went into a hot tap water filled bucket Just in case there was anything unwanted on them. I’ll pull them and let them dry out and save for later.

Just added my first corals this weekend. 4 Zoas, 2 Gonis, 1 Xenia and 1 Hammer.

My most recent params:
Temp: 79
pH: 8.1
Salinity: 34
ORP: 260
dKH: 7.8
Phos: .04
Calcium: 425
Nitrates: 7.4

I‘ve been researching the dKH and it seems the recommendation is 8-12.

I do weekly 5 gallon water changes.

Should I start looking at dosing as I add more corals? I plan to keep only softies and LPS.

You will probably want to test magnesium too. Look into Tropic Marin All 4 Reef. Buying the power is more cost effective than buying the liquid. I just dose manually. After you start keep an eye on your numbers. Also BRS just did a video today on 2 part dosing.

Following along. Will the stock lighting in a Biocube support an anemone?
thats awesome your anemone already hosted your clown. mine have been in the tank for over 2 months and only look at it. They like the algae magnet instead.

Yeah before I put the nem in my clown loved my wavemakers. She’s a ferocious little beast though and hates my glass cleaner. Attacks it the whole time I use it. Insane.

So far my nem is doing great with the stock light. My only issue has really been worrying about the temps but I’m not sold on going topless and getting another light just for a couple degree swing daily.

I didn’t last long before I removed the hood. I wanted too many sps. Needed a better light. Im happy with the move. It’s good to go at your own pace.

Yeah. I’m REALLY trying to be patient and learn as much as I can with the biocube. I know a bigger tank is in my future so I can hold off on SPS until then. And I actually like the motion of the soft corals in the tank.

This summer will be the test for keeping the hood. If I have to battle high temps too much I’ll probably end up pulling it and getting a screen top and light.

Which light did you go with?

Xr30 blue. It’s overkill but I don’t need to worry about par or complete coverage. Even when the corals mature.

I was reading go your build and noticed you got the add on actinic LEDs. What did you think of that upgrade?
I thought they added some nice pop. I liked them a lot.

I even did A par measurement so you could see how much they added. You could easily keep softies and some lps in the tank. The blue was with the two actinics on. The red is the stock lighting

OMG. Earlier this week my new 4” frag of pulsing Xenia started moving. Like rotating around and wiggling. I was like…that’s odd. I hadn’t glued it in place yet and figured the current was hitting it just right but soon realized that wasn’t the case.

I found a hermit crab had discovered a shell embedded in the base of the rock the Xenia was on. He decided he found the most awesome house EVER and would not give up trying to take the shell and my entire Xenia with him. Took me 3 hours to coax him back into his old shell.

The Xenia was super upset by then but bounced back after a few days.

My wife swore if the Xenia didn’t make it we were having crab cakes for dinner! Lol
