My First Aquarium - Red Sea Max E170 (45gal)

Hello all,

While I am brand new to this hobby I am not new to build threads! Except the build threads I use to participate in were car related! Now don't get me wrong I'm still into my sports cars but I have shifted my main hobby focus from cars to reefing!

I'm pretty new to making videos but here is what I have so far:




Currently cycling my tank and once I determine tank is cycled I will slowly start adding livestock.

I'll attach a few pictures of the tank below but I think the Youtube videos I have thus far can give you an outlook on what I've done so far!

Will mostly post pictures in here as things progress, as well as continue to make short videos on what I'm doing.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns, remember I'm brand new so I've probably already made like 20 mistakes LOL.

My cat is also patiently waiting for the tank cycle to complete, either that or he wants to become a catfish!

Had to shut down my MP40 due to being too much flow for the black molly + the bumble bee snails seem to enjoy perching on it and I don't want them to get sucked in and chopped up! Will most likely put the MP40 back online when the molly is bigger / when corals are introduced into the system.

Started cycling tank July 1st. Added a shrimp tail, black molly, bumble bee snails, feeding a little more than I should for one fish. Added 2x dose of TurboStart 900.

Current values as of July 8th:

Ammonia: 0 (Sailfert)
Nitrite: 0 (API)
Nitrate: 11.6 (Hanna)

7 days feels too fast? I'm probably gonna wait an additional week before I put anything else in the tank, even then I'm still going to be stocking slowly.

Just installed an MP10 to take over the duty of the MP40, seems to be much better option for this size tank given that the fish I am getting are still small and theres no corals yet. Will most likely switch back over to the MP40 when the molly is full grown and can swim stronger.

I’m starting the same build E170 max. Getting ready to do my aqua scape this weekend and then fill and cycle.

Nice. Things have been going smoothly for me so far. Saw some diatoms pop up, added some copepods and they seem to be going away after a week. I should have another video update here shortly!

Just an update. the coquina clams from the ocean I got are still alive, about a month later. I've been dosing phyto every other day, in combination with spirulina dosing every other day as well, seems to be enough for them to filter feed on!
