Hey guys I'm at my friend's house right now and his water is really cloudy. We just setup a 40g breeder that's been setup about 3 weeks. Noticing alot of brown stringy film at the top of his tank. All the corals and fish look fine. Parameters are all good. We're currently doing a 30% water change. Any ideas what this is or advice to help clear it up?

It is 3 weeks old, it is an ugly phase and has to be fought. Looks like cyano.

I don't like what heard about chemiclean and corals. There has been a few cases of corals going downhill and not opening up.

Worth a shot, any protein skimmer?

Maybe have him get skimmer or at least a surface sskimmer. The tidal wave filters offer that. I never owned one honestly.
He has this. Brand new in the box should he put this in for now? Can you send a link to the skimmer your talking about.

It’s a bacterial bloom. Add a protein skimmer or airstone to ensure fish get enough oxygen. It should resolve within a week or two on its own, but protein skimming and/or a UV sterilizer will help. Water changes won’t do much to help (still do them if other parameters suggest you should). Just a thing that commonly happens in new tanks.
