Expected to come home from work today to see shrooms all sprawled out and loving life but between the lamp getting wierd and all the excitement this last week they are looking kinda sluggish. Probably telling me let them chill for a bit!
Something cool tho I pulled a gulf rock from reservoir just 2 days ago and its got fluorescent orange dots that popped up on it

Alright man starting to feel like @fishguy242 tonight. Been at it for few solid days. Got whole entire left 2 tables and reservoir officially tore apart, deep cleaned put back together. Installed my diy algae turf scrubbers and moved as much gulf rock as I could fit over under neath the reef light.
Super clean and efficient now.
I have a feeling these turf scrubbers are going very effective. I built them other day put them together before I glued everything and let it run for few hours dialing in things.
When I took it out to dry and glue I could already see the screens starting to get stain on them Same color as this hair algae ive been dealing with
Anyhow check it out. Figured I'd give quick tour from left to right.
ATO in closet gravity fed to reservoir on float valve.

So i let this run for few hours Tuesday night getting dialed in before glue. Install on Wednesday night.
Already growing algae!! Im actually kind of shocked although it did stain in just the few hours it was up on Tuesday Just wow man. Why didn't I do this sooner? Took all of about half hour to build and another half hour to get fine tuned and glued!
On another note probably couldn't have done all this at better time. Got a dual tds meter (finally I know) and come to find out my top off water been running anywhere from 2-4 tds depending how long i let it burn before topping off ato.
Got some proper di resin coming to refill the dual di cans asap.
We will just have to see who wins this war of attrition with algae

How fast or how many GPH are you putting through yours?

I'm at a slow trickle but not sure if I should start stronger and dial back or vise versa...

I guess thats why it's called a break in

Probably just pure luck on the one that's growing algae already. That side is set up to allow overflow to run through it. Its a nice steady stream is all I can say I'll take another gif and show you here in a bit.
The one of the left side is on pump. Gonna see how it does but its pushing a little harder and may have to dial it back a little. Hoping it will be ok though I don't want to mess with it anymore.
I did set these up to where I could slide the straps over and quickly remove them both in about 30 seconds for cleaning.
I may have to put small ball valve on pump on left side and slow down though.
We shall see.

Nope not luck - totally normal. Algae will go through phases for the next 6 weeks until it itself matures. This first algae you are seeing is not the one you want. So don't forget to rinse it weekly for the first few weeks and brush that brown yuk off. In 3-4 weeks you will see dark green algae - that's the keeper!!

Thanks man good to know I am noticing the nasties for sure. Really kind of dissapointed I waited so long to get tds meter. I have to imagine all that gunk that been discoloring and growing in my discs has everything to do with whatever has been getting by. Really hoping I get this all cleaned up and in check in next few weeks. I got a bag of purigen and carbon in there as well feel kinda helpless knowing water is not at best quality right now!
Live and learn I guess.

Hope everyone is well. Been super busy here nonstop honestly.
Its official. I have have declared war on nuisance algae. Been cleaning up racks, rock, tables, discs and anything that I dont like looking at
Most of all poor water quality. Found out my water was much worse off than I imagined. Cant sleep on it. My water is horrible. Its honestly my fault. Ive done tons of work at almost all water treatment plants within 100 miles from me and its a common theme.
Im not sure ive ran into one engineer or anyone on the job that hasn't said they wouldn't drink our water and most where walking around with face masks before face masks became popular.
Anyhow got RODI in check! Adding more DI stages and new filters on the way. For now I'm pulling 0ppms but it's taking alot and burning through DI in the process.
Running phosguard in the interim I may even hit system with reef flux but thats last option. Its slowly but surely starting to clean up.
