The HOB filter will primarily just keep the water clear. Need to rinse filter media very frequently so i dont end up creating a nutrient pool. Are you perhaps suggesting it isn't at all necessary????????????
Absolutely not necessary. One of the most amazing 40g reef tanks I've seen had nothing but 2 power heads, a heater, and regular water changes. I only wish my system looked half as good as that one!

Should help keep heavy particulates out of the water, same as running a filter sock in a sump :)
But, this is a good reason to use one. They will remove particulate. It can also be an effective place to add media like GAC. So I would never suggest you shouldn't run one as long as you are running them for the right reasons.
