How long did you have to filter the water for ?
Literally as long as it took to vacuum my floor after I scrubbed my tubs/trays.
I set up my sock in sump and vacuum/siphon water from top down through sock back into sump.
Im about to clean my new tank for first time this week. I'm going to stick my overflows in socks while I clean my glass thoroughly. Let that circulate until it clears and then siphon out everything I can possibly get from floors and nooks and crannies.
If you and @James_O have nutrients in the water. Its all about removal of the nasties. Everyday with the sock if you have to. I was lol. Eventually nasties will subside and go away. Coraline will take place of nasties.

For sure bro if I was to do it all over again I'd stock tank with CUC of all kinds as soon as it was done cycling. Feed them, keep nutrients up, keep things tidy and let them do work. Pretty much how I'm doing new tanks. If I had sand I'd have even more nassarius snails a conch and fish the burrow in it and keep stirred/clean. For now those have to live in bowls of sand haha. Wife wants sand in tank 2 so its coming.

or buy the right one.
tank is now 3 years old.
i've never cleaned the sand. no vacumming.
sand is the same color as the day it went in.
no nuisance algae in the tank.
how/why?
i attribute it to a large worm, snail and hermit crab population.

I’m also a proponent of this , my tank was the cleanest/ growing the best when I did nothing lol just let the mulm accumulate and pods go crazy

All this talk about cleaning stuff makes me sleepy.

I really should throughly clean my sump.

But will I

Probably not till I move

And then I will clean it proper and not let if get that bad again

I have more spaghetti worms than I can count in my DT weird little creatures. Funny to watch the fish and hermits steal food from them
