My New tank has a disappointingly noisy drain

My tank came with this drain pre-piped. Turning the return pump down helped a little but not much.

I don’t know why the video file don’t work but here is a photo. It just makes a gurgling sound.

I'm no expert, but i do have experience with my system and it was a pain to get the return pump set at the right flow with the ball valve. I just continued to work it until everything was in sync. My new system is on the way with a gate valve.

My pump is DC variable speed. If I turn it down far enough the noise goes away but so does the return flow go way down too low.

Do a search for a herbie overflow. You’ll have to redo your plumbing and likely run your return out the back and over the top (depending on how many holes are drilled) but it is 100% worth it. Totally silent once set up correctly. You’ll never get it quiet with the way it is currently set up.

I have a ball valve for shutoff but I heard they don’t work well for flow control.

I agree with that and that's why i'm getting a gate valve on my new system. You are going to have to play with the ball valve (how much it is opened or closed) and how much water you are pushing with the return pump to get it right.

I was hoping to do something with the setup it came with. It came with this device not sure what it is to help with the noise. It fits inside the pipe.

Hopefully, someone comes along that is familiar with your system. Take a pic of your sump area.

Add a gate valve to the main overflow pipe and you'll be able to dial it in to match whatever return flow you want to use. As others mentioned it will take a little bit of patience to dial it in but when you do it should be silent.

What the heck is that thing lol, a carnival for snails?!
You just need to attach a durso stand pipe to the top of your drain. Your drain system is not complete, that’s why it’s abnormally loud. Google durso stand pipe, make one, stick it in the drain, much less noise, still not silent.

I have not seen that before but did you see it putting it in the pipe makes a difference?

Just my opinion but you’ll probably never be happy with the system the way it’s set up now. The herbie is easy to set up and definitely worth not hearing your overflow make noise every day.
