Tank maintenance day!
AD18438A-B728-49D6-B83D-AFCD63A65050.jpeg
I did a 5 gallon WC and pulled out about a quart of calerpa from the tank since it’s been growing rapidly ever since I switched frozen foods (LRS to Rod’S Reef…I’ll go back to LRS when I’m done). I also removed all the GSP on the tanks bottom to see about making some new real estate for some new stuff (Durasa Clam????). I also noticed that today my mag balled up for the first time which was pretty neat since it’s grown so large.

The second mag is still hanging in there, no bad signs other than the bleaching. It’s slowly regaining its color and is very eager to eat every other day (fresh 1/2 in. piece uncooked shrimp) so I’m optimistic. I have a few thoughts on what may have occurred to cause the bleaching event but I’ll wait to see if it makes a full recover before posting them.

How did you make those mounts?

I don't have any experience in tube nems....while searching for details/pictures for them growing in bottles/pvc..., I found this: https://animal-world.com/aquarium-coral-reefs/tube-anemone.

You have an awesome tank!
I didnt have any luck either finding info on keeping them in bare bottom tanks either so I took the chance on using bottles and PVC pipes and luckily it worked great! The thing I think makes the biggest difference is to ensure that the pvc or bottle fits nicely around the tube nem's mucus sleave. If they can sense the surface of the pvc or bottle they are more likely to stay in place and create more of the sticky mucus membrane to keep them in place.

Cashed in my store credit and got this T. Crocea clam (edit: found out it’s a Maxima)! Challenge accepted!! I need to make sure it has enough par so I make need to start shuffling coral in the tank again.

Moved the crocea to the top for max PAR and the mantle is fully now extended. The blues are so intense and there are small patches of gold that seem to be getting more pronounced. Absolutely beautiful, Now I’ve been wondering why I didn’t get into clams earlier!

Earlier this week temps got to 99 F locally and while I was at work the tank went above its stable 76F to 80F. My mag that was closest to the surface didn’t like the temp change and went walking to a lower spot. Well, it stung several specimens including the long poly leather. The leather is not doing well so I’ll be taking it out and placing it in a qt tank after an iodine dip…

Well I decided to trade in my green sinularia, a large bag or chaeto, and a neon cabbage for another long poly leather I saw at the LFS. This one came with two stalks so I felt it was an even trade. We’ll see if it’s as nice as my last one…

Also did a gyre and skimmer clean and the tank seemed to love the extra flow!

So a couple of updates; my LFS said they could order me a purple base mag for me for $15 (?!?) and I couldn’t pass that up! So we’ll see what actually comes in and if I wind up taking it or not. Also, the purple mag starting wondering again. At first I thought it may be spitting because it looked as it was stretching itself as far as it could, but never did.

It did allow me to see how much it’s grown and that I may need to reconsider my tank set up. I’m thinking of removing some corals to make more room and concentrate on a Ritteri/nem only tank. I leave for vacation starting next week so any major changes will have to wait. I’m also wondering if I need to increase my PAR (currently around 520 peak time) to prevent further wondering. I’m open to lighting and other suggestions or recommendations from our resident Mag Masters @Nemguy123 @OrionN @gig 'em @chizerbunoi @Sdot @atoll

Hey congratulations on your success brother! Not a beginner animal at all. Regarding movement, ive always been in the mindset to put them on an island, being thats impossible in your setup... i would consider your suggestion of raising the intensity, my concern would be we dont know if lighting is the issue in the first place

I don’t think lighting causes them to stay in place in so much as proper water flow. Mine always moved if I modified the water flow.

Your tank looks great.

Thanks @Sdot! Before I left on vacation I threw on a black box that I had lying around and set it at max and they haven’t moved since. In fact they stretched out to get more light. So I might be looking into getting more par for them.

Thanks @chizerbunoi! Just got back into town and luckily came home to no issues. I do need to clean my gyres to increase flow. What pump/gyre are you using for your mags?

So I spent the morning finally doing the move to get the mags in the center of the tank. This should accommodate the recent growth of the mags with out the purple getting stuck in the gyre. With the mags in the center they should have room to spread out and take advantage of the group of 3 kessil A360s above them. That should increase the par (haven’t checked it yet). I also moved and lowered the maxima clam and put the black box over it, but I may just swap that out with my A360N if I see it’s not doing as well at that depth. Fingers crossed.
