Hey Reefers!

Well hate to say but I got the itch and well it’s the good one. Probably bad one for my wallet.
I took a break from the hobby for a bit, and moved into another house.

Started looking for something larger but not too big. Then I was able to pick up this niceeee shallow glass box: 60” x 24” x 14”. Decided to turn it into something.

My plans are to turn it into a shallow SPS reef.

Similar to the one I had in 2019.

Equipment:
-60”x 24” x 14” - glass tank
Unfinished stand - not too happy about that...but I’ll have to do some research on making it look nice.
-Trigger 36 sump
-Nyos 120 skimmer
-60” Ati non Dimmable lights (may change to g5 radions)
-Sicce 5.0
-M1 vectra (missing the driver and power supply)

Here are some pics.

I ended up drilling it last night using the Eshopp l over flow.
Today I should be drilling the two 3/4” return lines, and hopefully plumb this puppy up.

I was also able to pick up an 90 Spectra Rodi Unit, salt, sand and macbacter to start some cycle going.

I was able to drill 4 holes and paint the interior, and exterior of the sump. The sump needed something to contrast, so I figured paint the sides and bottom white.

I also finished the plumbing tonight...going to let it dry and then do a test run in the garage.

Did the plumbing. So far no leaks! Time to move it inside.

I hope I do not regret painting/tinting the back glass.

Pictures really do not do this tank any justice. It’s pretty freakin large. I plan to have plenty of LR, predrilled with frag holes.
Several clowns, several tangs.
The 5’ length should give them plenty of room to stretch their fins.
The stand is going to be a tough one. But need to get doors ASAP.
OH MY GOD!!!!!!

I love this build so much! I currently have a 25 lagoon tank and the dream is a huge oversized lagoon style system! Really excited to see this develop and see what you do with it!

Keep us all updated!

I was able to add water, sand and the rock yesterday. Fired her up again in her final spot. No leaks...sand hasn’t cleared up. But the water line is super high.... I think I need to do the herbie overflow to get the water line down?
I also think that the ammonia alert is broken...it hasn’t moved at all. Should I add more ammonia?
This weekend I hope I can finish the stand. My toddler has already tried to mess around with the water.
Please let me know what you think!

Well it has been a very busy weekend.
We ended up getting a rain soft system and I had to install it. I ended up getting a really good deal on some Reef Fish; pair of clowns, Salifin, Tomini Tang. Unfortunately, I may have jumped the gun since the tank isn’t fully cycled. Please do not judge me, I may be boarder line irresponsible Reefer.
However, I put them in a bigger holding space, added a heater, air stone, live rock and media. I’ve also been testing to ensure the nitrates and ammonia levels are low. Fresh saltwater mix, having small water changes daily. I’m also playing with a couple ideas on finishing the stand. Plus, I got the m1 online, and it’s sooo much smoother. Super quiet.

Seems like the cycle is almost over??? Maybe... I’ll test for nitrites and nitrates this afternoon.

I checked in on the QT tank, and everyone seems to be good. Eating and feisty little critters.
My daughter (2years) loves walking up to them and plays with them in the tub ‍♂️. I’d like them to give her a little nibble, so she would stop.

5/7

Fish:

Ammonia 0ppm (left)

Ammonia: .5ppm (right)

Ended up hanging the Ati lights. I was debating on going radions, but these will do.
Unfortunately I didn’t have studs or enough crawl space to place studs like my old tank..so I ended up using the snaptoggle to install in the drywall above. I’m not 100% satisfied so I’ll have to make some adjustments in the event of failure.
Really like the look so far. Lights are 10” above the tank.

That is a ton of light for a shallow tank like yours. No pun intended.

It has been a busy couple of days!
I went ahead and added the fishes yesterday morning after Ammonia and Nitrite levels were 0. Nitrates were a bit high but did a small 5G water change, and turned on the skimmer to wet mode. Also doses MacBacter7, well finished the remaining amount into the tank.
So far these guys are great, swimming and eating like piggies. I am trying my best to feed light.
Speaking of light, I might have to look into switching lights...these Ati are beautiful, but are warming up the tank to 82 degrees. I’ve switch the channels to allow only a few bulbs, and raised the lights, but it keeps climbing.
I also added two MP40qd that I got for a really good deal. I’m not liking the Aesthetic look on the sides of the tank and will probably move them to the back. So far the placement is great at 50% not blowing too much sand around, since I placed the rock to block some of the waves.
I found a small leak on the overflow :( but I think I fixed it by tightening up the inner flange...atleast I hope. Other than that so far so good.
Looking for some cheap SPS from a local Reefer and “test” the water out a bit

It was a busy weekend! Almost done with the stand
Added a few corals -hammer, frogspawn, Walt, Dipping dots, Cherry Blossom, Orange Passion, Crazy Milli

Adding a baby hippo

Yes I know the tank is “young”, but I know they will do just fine.

Dino blooms in full affect!

I ended up getting a small clean up crew. Couple turbos, sand conch, snails and crabs. They have been cleaning it up nicely. Hippo and Tomini tangs have been cleaning the rocks as well. Salifin is just hanging out waiting for pellets or algae on a clip. So far the frags are doing great. I moved them to a fiberglass rod, but will be getting a 1/4” bit to drill better holes in the live rock for better placement. I adjusted the Ati to 2 channels; 1 whites, 2 blues.

Things are looking great! I am starting to see the cherry bomb encrust further, of it may be an illusion...but the bottom is starting to encrust over the frag plug.
