Nano Inspiration: Nano Photos Past & Present and Why Do You Nano?

I chose a small Peninsula tank as my first ever Aquarium ( I had a freshwater aquarium when I was a kid, doesn't count lol ) - Waterbox PM 25 - because I knew I wanted something small to divide my small living room / dinning area.

I also didn't want to go to big on my first try and regret having a massive aquarium.

I've struggled a bit, but I've found most everyone in the hobby to be very helpful and I'm starting to really enjoy my tank.

My issue is I love to tinker, and I love gadgets.

I'm 6 months in and I already want my upgrade! Lol

Tinkering too much might be the #1 reason I have lost the few corals I have since I started reefing about a year ago. Sometimes I feel like it’s best to just leave things alone rather than messing around too much, especially with flow or lights

I say this cause I just lost 2 nice sps frags that I feel like would’ve been fine if I never started messing with my flow about a month back.


I’m talking about my 90G not my nano but just some food for thought!!

Here’s my little 24 gallon Waterbox cube along with my IM Nuvo 20 softie (ish) tank! The cube has been running for three years while the Nuvo is a little over a year old! I don’t run a skimmer in my 13.5

What do you run for filtration just a hang on the back ? I have never done a nano build. I have also had a large saltwater tank

Not the best pic, but I took it last night before lights out. I love having a small tank. I've never owned a skimmer, just water changes every other week. If I were ever to go bigger, I would stay shallow - I love being able to easily reach everything.

10 gal waterbox with a clown and nem. I inherited the clown and the gha covered rock. I actually don’t mind the gha as it looks more natural. Will just keep it under control and since the corals I have in it are just gsp and Xenia, I can let it go a bit.

I think it would be helpful to define what "Nano" means... to me it's anything in the 10-Gallon and less variety, which means my tank doesn't qualify, and I see a lot of tanks that are offered as "Nano" tanks that wouldn't fit my definition, but other smaller tanks that are not offered as "Nano" tanks. So there's a disparity in the Industry due to lack of a clear definition :-D

I commonly find 30 and under is considered a nano with the 32 s right on the edge which is why I like em all the benefits of a nano without alot of the problems they come with another way to classify Nanos are the types of fish you can have if only nano fish fit well then it's a nano tank

Heres my 20 gallon long that I've had since March of 2020. I had always wanted to get into Saltwater for the fish and the corals so a Nano was the way to go. I also took the approach to keep the costs low so a Nano can check that box if done right.
When I started the hobby there was such a large emphasis on when you get your first tank its better to have a large one to make it harder to mess up. I thought if I could have success with a small tank then when I take the jump to a larger tank then it should be relatively smooth sailing. So far its been a great experience in the hobby hobby and I can't wait to upgrade!!

My 32 nano I only clean the glass once a week so the snails and micro stars I have dont starve so sorry for the algie on the glass

It also tells me what the tanks doing to much growth high nutrient to little low nutrients mainly non calcified green low calcium lots of calcified green high calcium cyno low phosphates diatomaceous tank is in a mini cycle for some reason and an immediate water change is nessisary same with the zoa they shrink or get larger in size which is a sign of iodine levels

Love my nano tanks. Have a 16g and 2 13.5g evos. The 16g and 13.5 are connected to a 20g sump below. The newest 13.5g evo is a separate system completely.

These are all set up in my office with a chiller and auto top off for the weekends.

When I started in 2000, everyone said start a reef in minimum 75 gallons. So I went with a 38 gallon. I did the upgrade in two years to a 55 then a 65, now been down at a 29 gallon with sump for over 10 years.

Here's some current shots of my standard 29 gallon with sump. I don't do bigger tanks well. I like WC's to be done in 5 gallon buckets and only using one at a time. Since I own my home I've already drilled holes for the ATO and the kalk doser. I'm considering plumbing into my ATO line so I can pump my water change water from the basement without having to carry the 5 gallon bucket up the stairs .

My max nano, I’ve been on and off the idea of either Goni dominant, mushroom dominant or a Gorgonian dominant tank. I have balanced a thought of mainly SPS aswell.

I’m not even that big a fan of gonis but after seeing @sbb_corals post on ig of that goni field I think Goni dominant would be amazing.
