Hello,
My LFS sold me this fish saying that it’s a Pygmy angelfish. Admittedly I was unfamiliar with these types of fish but they assured me he can be kept in my tank with no issues. The store and tank were dark so I missed a few things on my initial exam and found when I took him home that this guy was a little worse for wear. I have been trying to research what type of Pygmy angelfish he/she is so I can provide him/her the right care but he/she does not seem to be one of the more common ones. The closest fish I can find that resembles him/her is a pygmy yellowtail. If it helps, I think it arrived on a shipment from Indonesia. Can anybody help me with this and assure me that this guy is indeed a dwarf species that won't grow massive?

Poor chap, he looks like he has had a hard time! He needs some tlc. As others have said, I think it’s a Pygmy yellowtail

That does look like a Centropyge flavicauda, sold as the "yellowtail pygmy angel" but also as the "whitetail angelfish". The bright blue stripes on the pelvic fins are the key. They can look very pretty when in good condition, but as others have said, this one is a bit "shop worn", with the fin damage and muted coloration. When Hawaii was open to collection, we would see Centropyge fisheri, which can look very similar, and may be a synonym.
