Last week this guy had a couple of these spots and I initially chalked to up to some aggression from a purple tang when he got introduced to the tank. The aggression only lasted about a day and these things are definitely multiplying. There is a dark circular spot and then a white protrusion coming out of the periphery of the dark spot at each of the sites. They are much larger than any ich or velvet spots I have ever seen. For scale, this fish is almost 6 inches from tip to tail. So far his behavior and feeding are normal. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing none of the other fish are showing symptoms?

This could be mucus plugs or maybe lymphocystis. The fact they are multiplying is a little concerning. They are too large for ich or velvet.

In the photo the surrounding area appears a bit reddish. Is that what you see? How long have you had the fish? Could be the after effect of an encounter with one of the other fish.

#fishmedic may have better diagnosis. Until then I would observe for any signs of infection and be prepared to administer antibiotics. The

None of the other fish are showing symptoms. This guy has only been in the tank for two weeks now after going through quarantine. My purple tang went after him pretty good when he was first introduced, but that only lasted about 24 hours. I initially thought they were just injuries and thought they would slowly heal, but there are definitely many more now than before and I have not seen any aggression towards him since that first day.

The area around the white protrusions you can see in the photo are not red and appear to be internal (or at least beneath the scales). They just appear as darker spots and are really hard to see unless he is backlit and they appear as shadows.

My guess is that these are scalpel hits from the purple tang, with mucus exuding from the wound.
