I often suggest using a piece of cardboard and tape starting from the top of the light to determine which overall height is best for you. Most customers choose between 3" and 4" overall height to achieve the best light spill block based on their led light mounting height.

do I need these if my lights are inside a canopy? Is there any benefit?

You may or may not need them if you have a canopy. It depends on your intended use. Mostly people use them instead of a canopy to prevent light spill. Other reefers have placed aluminum tape on the inside of the shade and used it more as a reflector.
