So, I’ve tried a clam once before in a previous tank and it was a ORA Derasa as well and I had no luck. Didn’t make it two weeks and never really opened up. I have a few questions about this new one (about 3 in) I purchased with some birthday gift cards. I have it on the sand bed between my two lights getting a fair amount of PAR. Last I measured it’s about 160-175 par there.
Water Parameters:
SG = 1.0255
Alk = 8.7 and very stable
Calcium = 440
Magnesium = 1440
Nitrate = 2.0ppm
Phosphate = .02ppm
I have a fair amount of flow in the tank, but I figure if my Acanthophyllia nearby can handle that spot and be open and happy, the clam should be okay. It isn’t getting blasted, but does get some good indirect flow every once in a while.
It reacts to the light very quickly and seems to close just a bit every time a fish swims over it. Hopefully it will stop its nervousness and open all the way, but it’s only been a couple hours, so we’ll see.
Questions for you:
1. Does this look like a good spot for it?
2. Does it look healthy?
3. Do all clams close a bit when a fish swims over it?
4. How long until clams typically open up fully?
Thanks! I really hope I can keep a clam, because they have always been on my dream list. First photo is the clam (half open as it has been). Second is a full tank shot for reference showing the clam in the center.
