I picked up one of the new Hanna HI783 Magnesium checkers when they dropped last week, and after one or two mulligans I got it working pretty well.

A little more complex than the basic hanna tests (requires 2 reagents) but nothing too bad, especially vs the other titration mag methods. The toughest part is getting a precise measurement on the syringes, I find them inconsistent.

Step 1: Add 4ml reagent 1 (HI783A-0) into dry cuvette
Step 2: Add 5ml aquarium water to cuvette
Step 3: Invert a few times/add to tester and press C.1
Step 4: Add 1ml reagent 2 (HI783B-0) which will bring to cuvette 10ml fill line
Step 5: Invert a few times.add to tester and press C.2

Worked well on a control test with 35ppm RSP, reading 1388 (package says 1350), and on informing me my DT is overdosed (1800+ x_x)

Im happy with it - will definitely keep it in the Hanna toolkit. What do others think about the new tester?

I’ve mentioned in another thread that I tried the new tester on the Fauna Marin reference solution which has a magnesium value of 1315ppm. The tester gave me readings of 1455, 1510 & 1580. It reads to high and has widely varying readings. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

Have you verified your results with another test kit?

The dozen or so reviews I saw pop up on Facebook all mentioned it read high. 300-400ppm high in some cases
you do have to be pretty precise with the reagents or you get a overdose read
Have you verified your results with another test kit?
no ill try it against my Red Sea when I get time, and post back

Dang! I should have a bit before gotten mine. I crossed checked it with salifert and the highest was about 300 off! The worse part is that is not consistent. First test was 1610, second was 1360. So I tested with salifert and it was at 1350.

after hearing about this issue so I tested at least 5 more times and it was all over the place. I spoke to Hanna and will return it for a replacement but it’s in back ordered for a 4 weeks wait.

lastly I think we tests were at “1000” and salifert tested for 1280.

I bought one as well. My first test came back at >1700...

I've been targeting 1450ish and had around there with the salifert test kit.

I kind of assumed it was user error and didn't have a chance to retest it as I was in a hurry. I'm going to run both tests tomorrow and see how I make out. Will post back.

I really want it to work, but now I'm worried hearing others with wild results as well.

Update:

I ran the salifert test kit tonight and got 1440. Pretty close to what I’ve always been getting. I then ran the Hanna checker three times. The first time using my pipette to measure (it’s spot on, verified by weight). I got blinking 1800 (>1800).

the second test I followed their directions to a T and used the included syringes & tips and got 1670. I then repeated a third time using their included syringes and tips and got 1755.

I’m not impressed. I’m going to contact Hanna and see what they have to say because like I said, I’d love to have a reliable magnesium checker to add to my other Hanna checkers but the one I have isn’t it.

hopefully they can work out the bugs.

I am exactly on the same page with you. I am sending back mine next week. I was told it’s on back ordered for estimate wait time of 4 weeks. They need to sort this out before loosing too much credibility in this field.

It's funny because I saw a review on YouTube of one and he was getting spot in the middle of two other test kits. I'm hoping they have a bad batch of reagents or testers and it's not just an inheritant flaw in the testing process itself.

The calcium checker is reliable as long as you actually use it correctly and use distilled water, not RODI.
The Hanna Ca works perfectly well with distilled and RODI. The instructions actually state to use RODI.
The problem most have is with the 0.1ml pipette and trusting the line on the cuvette.

If you use a lab grade micropipettes to measure everything it works fine.

I also think there is a uniformity problem with the included Hanna curettes/syringes, they are not at all precise and likely a big source of all the Hanna testing problems across their test line
