It’s normal but needs to be kept under control otherwise it can get out of hand

What are your ammonia, nitrate and phosphate levels

How many hours are your lights on

Does the cleanup crew avoid that area
Do you see trail marks etc
Nitrates: 5 ppm
Phosphates: 0.13 ppm
Ammonia: I don't test
Lights are on 7.5 hrs with a ramp up/down of 1.5 hrs on so 10.5 including the ramp up/down times.

The Goby and stars do avoid the area.

Levels seem fine to me
What kind of lights are they

I'm using three AI Hydra 26 HD's

I think lowering the light hours to a total of 8 hours should help with the issue you are having
see how that works for you and go from there
you can also do a 1 hour up and down to get 6 hours of day

I would also lower the red and green spectrum

If there is little flow i would increase it

Your cleanup crew can be avoiding that area because they just cant keep up with the rest of the tank
Or something is bothering them in that area

Thanks for the feedback.
I increased the flow last week.
I will also go ahead and adjust the lights and see if that helps.

This is really good thread. I've just bought the same aquarium. It's been 20 years since I last did salt water tank. I'm looking forward to jumping into building a reef.

Thanks for documenting your effort.

So the issue with having the brown growth on the sand was due to overfeeding. I started taking it easy on the feeding and the tank overall looks better.

So now in one section of the rockwork, between rocks I have this stuff growing that looks like cotton. Does anyone know what this stuff is? Should I be worried?

Need some advice.
I'm seeing a couple of aiptasia anemone's in my tank and I am freaking out because my last tank got overtaken by them.
Can anyone share their method of keeping these suckered under control. I have already gotten a peppermint shrimp which does not seem to have any interest in them.
Maybe you should consider getting some berghia sea slugs- all they eat is aiptasia. Berghia sea slugs are completely reef-safe, and will reproduce quickly once fully grown.

Good luck, and happy reefing! ;)

I decided to put the 2 Zeovit products I dose the most on a dosing pump, Pohl's Xtra and ZEOstart3.
Here is how I did it. Hopefully the pictures will help someone else who is thinking of doing this.

So I just started it up and primed the lines. Make sure to leave the caps a little loose on the containers to allow air in as the liquid gets pumped out. Or alternatively you can drill a small air hole in the cap of the bottles.
If you don't do this the containers start imploding.

I got to the bottom of this problem. I got a little heavy handed with the feedings which included oyster feast. The Phosphates and Nitrates had spiked. I reduced the feedings and completely eliminated the oyster feast. As soon as the Phosphates and Nitrates came back down the growth went away.

Today I took a look down my overflow and I have a whole bunch of aiptasia living in there. Do you guys ever clean the overflow? How do I get rid of all of the aiptasia in there?

I have had aptesia in a different tank and the only thing that worked for me was a peppermint shrimp i had two one did nothing ata all and the other was a beast that would be my recommendation (it might get sucked down though)

Unless you want to shut down temporarily and scrape it all off (with a bucket by the drain rinse then start your tank agin
Depending on your overflow it might be difficult but thats what idd try to do and use hot water to rinse just in case they are living in the pipes (Be careful you don’t do damage with the hot water)

Creating a strong bulwark: Did you consider floor support for your reef tank?
