Hey everyone. Long time fishkeeper here who has been doing freshwater for awhile and loves it, but I want to try my hand at salt. I'm here to ask for guidance on choosing my first salt water tank (gallon wise). I have two options in mind. First of all, I recently built an 8 foot x 2 foot stand. I have found a used 240 gallon fish tank (not drilled) that would fit on it. Around $700. My other option is a waterbox 90.3 (60 gallon display 25 gallon sump) used tank that includes a whole host of equipment, from a protein skimmer to 3 ai prime lights. Pretty much all set to go besides the liverock and livestock. This is going for $600. Seems like a great deal considering the lights cost more than that alone. My goal is to have lots of coral, I don't want a fish only tank. My bucket list fish is any species of tang, which I know the waterbox locks me out of. I would go for the 240, but not having a sump scares me with saltwater. I'd really like some input on how (and if) you can do a large saltwater tank like this with no sump. I'm not interested in risking it and trying to drill the tank myself. Only equipment I have going into this that I can use is my RO filter from BRS. So, if you were in my position, would you start off with this larger, non sumped, 240? Or start smaller with the waterbox 90.3 which includes everything but locks me out of some of my favorite fish. Thank you!

You can have someone drill your tank if you are afraid of it. I would be hesitant to run a larger system without a sump as the equipment demands are not sized to hang on. You could run a couple hang on overflows?

If you dont go with your 240 then you are settling. But, wait, plan and do it right.

Thanks. And yup, I agree on the settling part. I have a feeling I'll be wanting to upgrade right after setting up the smaller tank haha. I guess I'll keep a lookout for a drilled 240.

Would a bottom drilled tank like this work with a sump? Unsure of how it works to be honest
