Hello all. I've been doing some reading around this forum and decided it had the most relevant information and was the most active so I decided to join!

I recently got an IM Peninsula 20 - which is basically a 20L that has compartments on one end for nano-type equipment. This tank will be sitting on my counter island in my living room. My vision is to have a reef tank with a few fish and trying to keep it as simple as possible - so no sumps or refuge tanks etc. I'll be starting with live rock and live sand and once that is cycled, introduce some hermit crabs and snails, then shortly after a shrimp or two. I still haven't fully decided on fish but I know I won't have more than 5 in there to keep the bioload reasonable.

Here's what I have or plan on getting - any thoughts are welcomed:
  • IM Peninsula 20L tank
  • Current Orbit Marine LED 24"-36" (wondering if it'll be sufficient for my goals)
  • InTank Media Basket w/ Chemi Puer Blue & Purigen & floss
  • Sicce Syncra Silent 1.0 251 gph pump
  • Current eFlux wave pump 1050 gph (main current pump)
  • Hydor Koralia wave pump (mount near water level for agitation)
  • eShopps Protein Nano Skimmer (for later when bioload is higher)
  • Mesh top (do not have yet.. considering making my own?)
  • LED mount (not sure if I'll have space to mount with the skimmer.. waiting for parts to get in)
  • Heater (would like to get one ASAP to include in cycling - recommendations?)
  • Thermometer (same as heater)
Any comments on the equipment would be greatly appreciated. I do not yet have the last 4 items listed.

As for my process, since I'm a newbie, I've been doing a lot of reading and from what I can tell, my process would be as follows:

1.) Purchase live rock and live sand from store (duh.. lol)
2.) Pre-rinse live sand with salt water to get any loose debris off
3.) Lay sand in, then salt water then aquascape live rock as desired
4.) Let nature take its course, testing for ammonia a few times a week
5.) May or may not introduce an accelerator (Turbo or just use one raw shrimp)
6.) After all levels have settled, do a 50% water change (still unsure about how much - is 50% ok?)
7.) Introduce clean-up crew

Is this pretty much it? Am I missing something? Sorry for the long post.. it's my first so I gotta make it count.. haha.

Sounds like you are well on your way. Some people rinse the live sand. I never do, it's whatever your comfortable with. On my current build i went with dry rock and seeded with a piece of live rock from my other tank. Done shrimp and dr. Tims all in one. There are several ways to get where your going.

The light you need is going to depend on the corals you intend to keep. For nano tanks my vote is for an ai prime hd. One wave pump would be enough flow for the tank as well no need for the second. Good luck with your build.

Thanks for the input! After reading a bit more, I think I would keep the 2nd Hydor pump for a QT bucket. As for the light and type of coral, looking to have a variety but probably staying away from SPS since I hear they're probably not best suited for beginners. My LFS also suggested the AI prime HD.. it's definitely more than I thought lighting would be! ;Greedy

Lol and the ai primes are on the cheap end of good lighting. If you already have the current orbit light try it out and see how it does. You can always upgrade later.

If you are going to do the eflux 1050 and want to add a second wave pump, I would add their 650, that way you can control both on one controller. I have the biggest eflux and I think they are a great wavepump.

Interested to see what your goals are with the lights. I dont like the Orbit lights, I have read way too many reviews advising that they say the can grow coral but they cant reach very far in depth. I would also suggest an AI prim or even better the AI Hydra 26 since its a long tank.

Heater- I would go with ehiem or finnex.

What are you using the sicce pump for?

1.) Purchase live rock and live sand from store (duh.. lol)- If you are doing live rock, you can get dry sand as a cheaper option
2.) Pre-rinse live sand with salt water to get any loose debris off- This might be difficult to do with salt water, most that use live sand just dump it in.
3.) Lay sand in, then salt water then aquascape live rock as desired- Do your rock first, that way it wont shift if there is a fish/invert moving sand.
7.) Introduce clean-up crew- Just make sure when you introduce that they have nutrition to eat and not starve.

Geebs thanks for the input!

I got the Hydor as a gift after I purchased the eFlux so I figured I’ll use it as a 2nd pimp.. it’s small.. about 240gph.. so now I’ve decided to keep it for a QT bucket. However I do agree getting another eFlux would be better since I’ll have control.

The orbit light hopefully is enough but I guess we’ll see. I know it’s better to invest more up front but I already have it so I’ll just use it and see.

The Sicce pump is just to upgrade the pump that came with the tank. After reading many reviews, it was a common suggested upgrade.

I’ll definitely consider getting dry sand as you suggested after reading so much that the live rock would be the largest house for bacteria. Yes the CUC will be introduced with copepods and plankton.

Hello,

It’s awesome for what you have planned and I think everything you have set up is perfect. Those who claim the current marine orbit pros won’t grow lights are not super accurate in that. My tank is a 240 and 34 tall and the marine pros grow all my sps and my Maximus clam really good. My tank is 9 months old here are some current pics of it. I totally love your idea and how your doing it.

Sincerely
Sarah

Sarah your tank is amazing! Hard to believe it’s only 9 months old! Congrats and great job! I like how your setup looks so meticulous.. and all those beautiful corals omg.. thanks for giving me some faith on these lights. My tank is only 12” tall so add about 3” between the top and the light itself - there should be enough throw I’m thinking.
