Best tip I received was don’t chase number. Do your water changes and dose for consistency.

My pro tip. Know your tank, everything going on in it. From PAR levels to ORP. The more knowledge you have of your system to better your success will be. Data log every test you take so you can find trends as well as marking down how everything is doing at a certain time so you can depict what exactly the parameters of your system produce the best results. The more you know, the better you will be.

Official entry:
Start looking for the cause of the problem instead of constantly treating the effects of the problems.

The best piece of advice I got was to take things very slowly. Adding too much livestock all at once can cause large swings in parameters or introduce pests/dicsease.
When I first started I didn't listen to this advice and lost all my fish essentially overnight when a new guy brought in marine velvet.

My best advice is less is more, the less you mess with the tank chasing chemistry and certain levels the better. The less you stress the fish and corals out with moving stuff around or constant changes the better off you are. Patience always wins in the long run. It’s like backing up a trailer. Small changes at a time can be significant. A large change can be catastrophic

If you have an algae outbreak remember there are other ways besides chemicals. Try a week long black out and scrub and water change. That’s what the sea does!!

Build slow, think thoroughly, and do not look for instant gratification. Otherwise you end up cutting corners, wasting time, and wasting money.
