What makes you think it’s not a pure? From what I see there’s no reason to believe, at least from the pic, that it has any Flagfin lineage. The tail as well as both the upper and lower body fins are black with blue margins. The pattern on the body also isn’t what I’ve seen from many of the hybrids.

These are some pictures of older (maybe in the 4-5” range) Goldflake x Flagfin hybrids from a Taiwanese dealer that has connections with Su of Bali Aquarich.

hybrids seem to not have the black tail this is a pure goldflake imo he looks exactly like this
goldflake.JPG
The photo makes the bottom of the dorsal, just before the black look a beige colour (Similar to that seen in griffisi).

I don't think the dorals fins are ever all black though look at this 1

Yeah, but also the yellow is a vibrant solid yellow with specks whereas on yours it looks to be a dull brown/grey line.

Yeah send a few more pics hopefully better ones.

I have to say I’m also not a big fan of Su’s methods. He doesn’t do this all the time, but sometimes he mixes different kinds of angelfish in one big pool with the hope of forming “accidental” hybrids. With quotations because this guy sometimes experiments with crazy combinations. I’d rather he drop his work on most hybrids and focus on breeding purebred species. I personally have no interest whatsoever in say, a Joculator x Multibar hybrid (which Reef Builders has covered before) when I can get a nice purebred Joculator or Multibar. Like, what’s the point?

Sure I can see the appeal of crossing something like a Lemonpeel with an Eibli as it’s a well-documented mix in the wild (Tigerpyge), but hybrids for the most part are just a case of someone chasing the new and novel to prove they can.

Take one of his latest creations, the “Nebula Angel” which is a Xanthotis x Griffis cross. Putting aside the fact that the purebred Griffis isn’t all that attractive of a fish, why doesn’t Su invest all the time and energy in cross-species pairings and put that into breeding pedigree Xanthotis instead? They’re better and more exotic looking than the pretty drab Xanthurus Cream.

Another one of his newer projects, the so-called “Blue Phantom Angel”, is a cross between a Maze and a Black Velvet. While this cross is totally possible and probably does occur in the wild, it confuses me as to why he doesn’t simply produce more Maze Angels which he has done before and still does occasionally. Why can’t he just ramp up production of C. Cephalareticulatus / Chrysocephalus?

I mean sure if it were not for him we wouldn’t have captive bred Majestic Angels, Regal Angels (though the scribbled patterns aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, definitely not mine), Scribbled Angels and a few others, but I really feel that in many cases he just doesn’t utilize his resources the way I think he should, all for the sake of trying out what’s possible.

He has replied to me personally but can be frustratingly opaque in the way he communicates and I can tell he doesn’t like me probing too much (despite the fact that I have mentioned numerous times I’m not a business rival lol).

A few years ago he also succeeded with the Rock Beauty. Not sure what happened but I have never seen them for sale whether here in Asia or in the West.
