Hello and welcome aboard, Beautiful start, you chose solid equipment and did a fine job on the build. It almost looks like you have done this before  Im no expert but the fuge may be causing your algae issues. If those plants aren't fed properly, Iron and other nutrients they degrade releasing organics. I struggled with my fuge for over a year and then removed it. Its a balancing act, but after seeing your build its one you can handle. Maybe try a 5 gallon WC weekly,
Best of luck!
TY! For the advice much appreciated and welcomed! Look forward to sharing the progress and what I do along the way!

Nice set up. Alk is the one parameter you have to dial in. Consider a dose pumps(s), once you dial this in your corals will love you! Pumps are inexpensive these days, very easy to make your own Alk. Good luck

Welcome to R2R! Some of us are crazy for this hobby. Ok, well, many of us. Well, really, I think it's a majority of us. Ok, in truth, we're all a bit goofy for this hobby. Welcome to the madness!

  • EcoTech MP10
  • Ecotech Vetra M2
  • AquaMaxx ConeS Q-2 In-Sump Protein Skimmer
  • AquaMaxx FR-SE GFO Carbon and Biopellet Hang-On Filter Media Reactor ( 2 total - one is running carbon - the other will run biopellets )
  • Kessil A360X Controllable LED Aquarium Light - Tuna Blue
  • Kessil H380 Halo II LED Grow Light
  • AquaMaxx cTech T-NANO Hang-On Calcium Reactor
Inhabitants:
  • Red Hermit x2

  • Some type of worm. Maybe sea-cucumber Medusa.
Parameters:
  • Ammonia between 0 - .2

  • Nitrate between 0 - 5
  • PH - 8.05 - Open to advice on ways to improve this without dosing. ( Air hose connected to skimmer from outside )
  • Temp 78
  • Salinity 1.25

*****UPDATE*****

Salifert (First time trying these want to compare to API)
  • Ammonia: <.15
  • Nitrate: 2ppm maybe less
  • Alkalinity: 6.8 (Hanna 6.2!?) what other tests should I get? Need to know if the Hanna is off.

Phosphate is at zero too which is so wrong. Going to return because the results do not change and I gave it another try before I decided that it’s defective. (Hanna)
Calcium: 539 ( was 546 down 7 ) (Hanna)
Magnesium: 1400 ( 1500 down 100 ) (Red Sea)

Removed Chaeto and left three golf ball sized pieces
Cleaned Skimmer ( every part )
Swapped out the carbon
Changed out the filter socks
Cleaned the top layer of the sand bed a bit

Will take a video :)

Before you return the Hanna known this. I always got zeroes too and then I bought the ULR Hanna pho’s checked and realized I got zeroes bc my levels were in the ppb instead of ppm range.

Love the set up! I can tell you researched the heck out of this. So cool to see you tuned into the chemistry side of stuff. That is what gets my nerd juices flowing ...haha

In my nano I try to do weekly 5 gallon water changes. In my big one, I use an AWC of 3 gallons a day. I agree with the above if params are cool then the coral seem to like the less water change for the nutrients.

Loved your stocking choices so far!

Hah! Now I know! Thanks so much for sharing that #hannatip. As far as water changes yeah! still have to get that AWC set up but figured it’s best first year to just do it ourselves that way we’re more aware of what occurs due to it. Yeah I caught on to that hmmm..

Thanks open to more tips! Thanks again.

Off to a great start with your build! Don’t stress too much about numbers the difference 6.2-6.8 dkh would be considered to be pretty much acceptable in term of variance close or within +/- .5 ppm. The ammonia will plateau in due time once it cycles and sand/rock fully cure 100%. I’ve used salifert kits for 18 years they’re accurate/consistent, don’t require a PHD to use, and a fair price it’s all around a win win! Good luck.
