Hey Everyone!

Im going to start my build thread in hopes I get some pointers and help along the way. My last reef tank was in 2011. I had a 54 gallon corner tank and a 120 gallon reef tank. I loved it! However I was promoted and moved my family from NC to CA. Had to sell it all. We are now back in NC and my wife refuses to let me get another tank at home (I spilled a lot of water back then). So....I got one for my office lol. She can’t control me there! Here are the details of the tank:

Reef Octo 32 gallon. Dims are 24x18x18. Will be a small mixed reef. Bought it off A local forum at a great deal that included the tank, plumbing, sump, skimmer and return. The skimmer and return pump are 5 years old so I’m going to replace them and may also buy a new sump unless I win what’s in my cart at BRS . Everything else I’m buying new.

Filtration: BRS biopellet reactor combo kit w a sicce 1.5
Turbo Media Reactor side flow medium - Lifegard - for my gfo and carbon
I will get a new skimmer and will probably get a Bubble Magus Curve 5

Rock & Sand: 20lbs Hawaiian Black live sand
Life Rock Shapes 20lbs Caribsea
A few random pieces, around 10 lbs of live rock from my lfs

Flow: Reef Power RP-M
2 tunze nanostreams 6015 *need some advice here, thinking of putting the RP-M on a side and the 2 Nano streams on the back facing forward* Reefbreeders recommenced the two nanostreams on each side and the RP-M on the back.
Vectra S2 return pump *this may be overkill...what do you think?*

Lighting: After weeks of research I settled on the Reefbreeders Photon 24-V2+. I’ll dial it back but would rather have too much versus not enough. Almost went Hydra 32 or Red Sea 90 but decided against those. I’ll upgrade eventually to a larger tank, it’s inevitable

ATO: Reef Breeders Prism ATO bundle

Test Kits/automation: MC 120 PH Monitor w probe and mounting kit from Milwaukee Instruments
Aqua chef Fish Feeder for weekends
Marine Depot Refractometer
Finnex 200 watt titanium heater w controller
Hanna ultra low range phosphate checker
Red Sea marine master care test kit
American Marine Pinpoint wireless thermometer
Aqua forest calcium and magnesium test kits

Then I have the electrical organization stuff I bought. Algae barn rapid cycle kit and the media itself, epoxy, etc. I’ll be using Red Sea Coral Pro salt with lfs RODI water. In a month or two I’ll get a dosing pump for the aqua forest 3 part system with Acro power in the fourth pump but I’m not there yet.

Should start putting it all together Monday thru Thursday as orders come in. Picking up the water, salt, return pump, sand and some rock on my way to work Monday. Will post pics and updates as I go along. For livestock I’d like a pair of clowns and maybe a Pygmy angel or small wrasse. We’ll see.

I like your setup. Can you take a picture of the front of the cabinet with the door closed?

So I rented a par meter. Probably can’t read my notes but this was taken 10.5” above the water with channels 3,5,6 at 60% and 1,2,4 at 20%. Very high par everywhere at these levels. Even the sand bed is over 200. On Monday I get the new mount for my light and will retest. I also raised the intensity to 75% and had the average tank par at 300, at 100% the rocks up top were averaging 450 and hot spot was 500. The reefbreeders Photon V2+ is no joke

I also upgraded the skimmer and bought a reef octo 110sss. Great skimmer that just took 1 day to break in. I added the MP10 so I have 2 tunze 6015s, a reefbreeders RP-M and the MP10. Turnover in the tank is 87x.
I’m going to change that sump out as well. I have advanced acrylics building me a custom sump that is 19x15x15 and functional. This one is a 19x12x16 box basically with no functioning baffles. New custom sump will have a refugium and 4 functioning baffles.

Decided to replace the RP-M with another MP10. Just bought it from Marine Depot. I'll have a RP-M for sale soon if anyone wants it. Works great, only 2 weeks old. I just like the look of the Vortechs better. WIll look better having 2 MP10's across from each other and synced up.

Some FTS and fish shots. My last fish will be a baby carpenters fairy wrasse that’ll be here tomorrow. Installed the new mount for the lights. Got the skimmer all dialed in. Started aqua forest 3 part dosing today. Went a bit crazy on the Jason Fox live sale this weekend so have a ton of stuff coming in. Everything looks good so far. Only equipment left is the new MP10 to replace the RP-M and the custom sump. Haven’t sent the dosing pumps and versa up yet. Hand dosing until I have it dialed in right.
Filefish is scaring me a bit. He is funny to watch and picks at the rocks all day. Nips at corals a little but not polyps so I think he is seeing copepods or algae. If he picks at my sps polyps he’s gone. The jawfish is my favorite fish. Kind of made a mess of my substrate but he’s so fun to watch.

I went with the attached lighting schedule. Added a bit more white to the AB+ settings. Maxed intensity for 4 hours in between the SPS and LPS recommendations. 8 hours total PUR. Mid to high in the tank the Par is 350-450 and drops to 300-400 2 inches from the glass on each side. Back glass is around 230 so I may try some monti caps there. Sand and lower parts of rocks are 150-250

Some new additions. Fish stock is done. Also received 10 corals from Jason Fox. Have one more order coming in then I’m done for now. Stocked up with a ton of coral and now gonna focus on stability and parameters. Installed a CO2 scrubber today as well. Everything is going well so far

Been almost a month so wanted to post some updates. I broke my skimmer by drilling a hole in the collection cup to install a drain. I did this because the skimmer overflowed for 3 days while I was out of town causing a bad algae bloom. Instead of fixing it or buying a new cup I bought a new skimmer. Went with the reef octopus essence. Should have it it tomorrow. I also installed an ApexEL. I have it controlling my vortechs, heater, skimmer and return pump. Soon it’ll control my lights if the VDM modules ever come back in stock. I also have the DOS and DDR for it but haven’t installed them yet. I am running two Versa pumps dosing kalk and magnesium. I love the Versas. Installed a CO2 scrubber and led light bar as well. Used a UV to get rid of the algae bloom. Lost most of my sps over the last 2 weeks waiting it out but got tired of it. Bought a UV, installed it yesterday and today the water is crystal clear just about. Finishing stocking the tank with fish. Lost one to a power head. Fish list:

McCloskeys Fairy Wrasse
Black Leopard Wrasse
Black Storm Clow
Black lined blenny
Electric indigo dottyback
Bicolor blenny
Yellow head jawfish

everyone gets along great unless they go near the jawfishs house. He is not very friendly lol. Not adding anymore coral until everything stabilizes.
