Where and how did he get into your tank?
Sorry didn't see this before I asked about the trap below...
I'm also jumping on the "how'd you trap him" bandwagon. I've had a loud clicking in my tank for a year or two, and keep toying with the idea of setting a trap.
put him in an acrylic tank. when they get big enough they can crack the glass of a small tank
Sautéed with a garlic butter sauce is best
What kind of trap? Picture and story !!!
great show on animal planet called killer shrimp.it's all about that beast good watch
Mantis shrimp are awesome with their ridiculous speed and cute weird eyes ! Just saw a couple species on a dive trip in Bonaire. Do not eat them with butter, @jkcoon.
yeah tell us all about the great catch.
Since he is a puncher, put him in an acrylic nano, he can break glass when bigger, FYI
Wow you are so lucky you caught him. I had to tear down a tank once to get one. I didnt see it for over a year but I had mysterious deaths and saw evidence of its existence constantly. They are awesome in species tanks, I have never gotten around to it but have always said I will have a peacock mantis tank one day, such a cool animal.
years ago we found one in some living rock we bought. it grew and was fine, until one day it struck the glass with its mandible and cracked it. BEWARE
You didn't happen to get it with some TBS live rock did You? That's where I got my red mantis.
Make sure you identify the type, smasher or spearer. I would guess smasher since you have lost snails.
I have had several and they are very funny critters. Sometimes they will just come out of the rock hole just to stare at you. Nano tank for sure
Had same issue and thought " he** no" as I knew already from the sound. Took me 2 months and every invert later that it ate including a sea hare to catch it.
What kind of trap and can you show pic of trap i need one if it works
Mine was trapped in order to get it out. It is a simple trap with clear fishing line. You place a piece of shrimp or frozen fish feed and hold door open.
When the specimen enters, release the string and it is trapped !
Here are examples. Pic #1 is homemade version with a soda bottle, #2.... most common and #3 is the One I have.
mine came from the gulf of Mexico . I left him in the main tank.1/2 of what you hear is bs. I feed mine on a stick. he comes right out. he never touched a fish. maybe once in a while a hermit or snail. but I feel it,s worth it. part of a real reef
I had a smasher few years back. I would feed fish and shrimp on a skewer couple times a week. He was in a 10 gallon and never had any issues with a glass tank. Here is a video.
