I just lost an Elegance and now my Hammer and Torch look real bad. I don't have updated parameters, I'll work on getting that. Results from latest param tests (Nitrates were above 5PPM, not the 0 shown) -

Hammer had this brown stuff on it -

Here is a video of it -

I blew it off with a turkey baster and it looked like this after -

Now the torch is looking really bad -

5ppm nitrates isn’t bad at all .
actually on the low side .
Without parameters , what lights , it could be a number of things .

How is the elegance ?
I’ve never been able to keep them happy .

How old is the system ?

Elegance died.
Stock BioCube 32 LED lights.
System is 1 Year and 10 days old.

I have tried so hard, been so patient and tried to do everything just right. Are some tanks/people just doomed to failure? I don't know if I can come back from this for this hobby... :(

Should I take them out? Just the thought of them dying either in the tank or in the trash devastates me!

Do people indeed think this is Brown Jelly? If so - I guess I'll try to go research that.

Take a small tube such as airline tube or 1/4" and siphon up the brown stuff and filaments. Then blow gently with a turkey baster and see if it returns and how quickly. Looks bacterial but may also be pre-stage dino.

What test kits are you using ?

I will say it’s a lot easier now than it was 20-30 years ago

there is so much information and resources available now

something is off and making them upset . Too much flow , improper lighting ,
Insufficient lighting ?

Research brown jelly disease. The first picture did look similar. I have dealt with it in the past and it is not fun.

Sorry for your losses. It can be a pretty harsh hobby sometimes.

What test kits are you using ?
Hanna for Phosphate and Nitrate
Salifert for Calcium Alk and Mag
Refractometer for salinity
API for others

It unfortunately does look like Brown Jelly aka Necrotic tissue. We used to dip them in an iodine bath to try to stop it but I'm not sure that is the preferred method these days.

This hobby can be harsh ..

I’ve lost 10+ years of collecting and growing corals in one night moving a tank .
It’s depressing and discouraging .

I was afraid there may be some API known for false and disappointing readings/results. Last time refract was calibrated ?

Legit. I bought the nicest Acan I had ever seen and thought this was it, I've reached the pinnacle of Acan collecting. Ended up being the last Acan because it melted away with brown jelly followed by $,$$$'s of other Acan colony's and frags. I blame having kids for getting out back in 2012 but it was that single event that really did it.

I only use API for ammonia and Nitrite - which I haven't checked in months.
Refractometer was calibrated ~9months ago.
Ammonia and nitrate testing are not required after cycling.
You need to be following Nitrate and Phosphate, and for Stoneys, Alk, CA and MG.

Calibrate your refractometer, salinity has an impact on the other parameters.

You can’t never just walk away .
Watching something grow and thrive . Knowing success is possible .

I’m in to deep to quit .
