I've been reefing since 2007, so 11yrs.

I would say on avg I've lost $150 to $200 a year in dead fish or coral.

So.... I would say in total I've roughly lost $2,000 maybe more

Tough to gage for me, being that I've been in the hobby so long. I would say loosing that much a year would be very high.

If I ran my prior tanks as cleanly and meticulously as I do now I would have spent much less... Hard work pays off :)

So far I'm in for one dollar and 24 cents ( cost of one raw shrimp). Only in for a few months so haven't had. Chance to ruin this record. I figure losses are inevitable more than likely from my own human error.
Before I started my other hobby of RC planes a gentlemen told me you will crash and burn at some point it's part of the hobby and no one escapes it. You can minimize it with caution and care but not avoid.
I think I will just not keep track past the 1.24 easier on my mental health in the end :)

Been in the hobby for.. 3 months.

Bought a Six Line Wrasse from a LFS -$14. Died the following morning.
Bought 3 Peppermint Shrimp (-$6), ate all my coral I literally bought the same day. Had to sacrifice them.
All that coral that got eaten, id say -$30
Bought a Purple Pseudochromis -$25, was a tank bully (Literal *******). Had to sacrifice it.

So far im -$75, Not bad honestly. The coral and peppermint shrimp issue was my fault, lack of research.

I dont count snails/hermits.

I stopped keeping shrimp because of this I would feed my shrimp the same time I fed my acans and they would always dig the food out the mouths.

This is exactly why I will not have shrimp in my tank... except a pistol shrimp. Any type of cleaner shrimp and even a coral banded will cut open your fleshy LPS and steal the food right out of their mouths. Shrimp are evil and belong in the sump to kill bristle worms and take care of left over food.
