Hi everybody! I plan on getting a yellow rose(high fin) goby, with a randall's(candy cane) pistol shrimp this coming winter for my new 10 gallon sea sponge setup. I've assured all compatibility is as desired, however I have heard some mixed opinions on keeping snails and hermits with pistols, so fingers crossed. I have some questions regarding pairing the goby with the pistol. Should both the shrimp and goby be added to the tank at the same time? Should the store that I purchase them from have the two in the same tank? Is there any risk of the two refusing to pair? Anything else you think I should take note of, please let me know.(newbie in the hobby:))

In a 10 gallon they will forsure find each other quickly. In a larger tank I would jus add them to the same area.

If they arrive at same time, in separate bags you could put them into a bucket together to acclimate. Then drop them into an area together. Lots of people use tubes to do this, similar to introducing clowns through a large tube to an anemone to try to get them to start hosting it.

I just bought a yellow face candy goby and a candy pistol shrimp pair on the weekend. My lfs bagged them together and I acclimated them together. They were inseparable even in the bag and within 10 minutes of being in the tank the shrimp was digging in the sand making them a home. The goby stands guard and the shrimp often peeks out. They're doing great!

Agree with commenters above.

I had a flagtail, orange-spot, and a pair of aurora gobies in a 6' 220-gallon. Added three tiger pistol shrimp, netting two down to spaces where the gobies held territories. (Tried to transport the third to a similar spot, but lost it into the rocks / back of the tank.)

One of the shrimp has dug out something of a labyrinth front & center, two entrances are monitored by the less dominant aurora and the much smaller flagtail.

The other two shrimp have paired up on the left end of the tank, where their holes are monitored by the dominant aurora. (Seriously; the fish isn't "pink-barred", it's deep brick red-barred.)

I had my yellow watchman goby first and then later bought the pistol shrimp. The shrimp built is cave under a rock and I haven't seen either since. True love is great, isn't it? I do hear the shrimp popping his claw at night though.
