Also for anyone who might know, is this a molt, or did my coral banded shrimp die? I put him in my 65g about 3 weeks ago and he’s been doing great until I found this today. It’s not the greatest pic so if you can’t tell, the body is an empty shell but it’s a bit torn up and the claws are opaque but one of them is separated. I would assume it’s a molt but I do have a neon dottyback in the tank. They’ve gotten along well for the most part though. Also, the RO water I picked up last night from my job tested with a TDS of 446. We’re fixing that and I’m gonna bring new water home tonight but I unfortunately topped off with that water last night before testing. My nem appears to have moved as well so I’m wondering if the water had an effect on my inverts.

I had a few of those in a 90g. I had a tendency to overfeed back then so they remained happy and didn't bother my corals......

Most of my peppermints have left everything alone (including aiptasia).
My current batch is great at eating aiptasia, but also love expensive corals. They ate a hammer, cyphastrea, and snack on btas.
There’s an inherent risk, but they are really good at their job. I don’t have a problem with them in reef tanks, but just be ready to move them if need be.

Pull it out, see if it's hollow or not. It looks quite colorful to be a molt, though.

Molt! I fish out one of these every 3-4 weeks from one of my two coral banded shrimps.

Some peppermint shrimp will absolutely eat coral. I personally watched one dine on my frogspawn, absolutely ripping it to shreds. And no, it was not a camel shrimp or some other species of shrimp. And no, it was not after I had fed the frogspawn. I tried spot-feeding the peppermint shrimp and overfeeding the tank, but nothing curbed its appetite for coral. So, I eventually had to get rid of it.

I feel like some people get overly defensive when certain animals are called out as not being reef safe, even when it's literally been witnessed first-hand. Unfortunately, some things labeled as "reef safe" in this hobby are not in 100% of cases. These are live animals and they will do what they want, regardless of what their "typical" behavior is. (Bicolor blenny...I'm looking at you too.)

I’ve used both these species with no issues with corals
The peppermint shrimp species Lysmata boggessi is the most common and reliable species for controlling Aiptasia in aquariums. Other species of peppermint shrimp that eat Aiptasia include:

  • Lysmata wurdemanni: A species of peppermint shrimp that is considered reef safe
I’m actually planning on a couple for my nano that I just got going

They do a great job with aiptasia. 1 cleared my 10g in a couple months.
Once it was done in there, I moved it to my 20, where I watched it dine on my RFAs and my Lucky Charms nem that was healing from a split.

It moved, then, quickly to my 15 to tackle the aiptasia in there.
However, all he ate were spirobid worms off the back wall until my dottyback killed it...

With all shrimp and crabs be wary. IMO the "reef safe" ones are all marginally reef safe with caution. Dont turn your back on them.
I love when people put out the names of the ones you want. I dont trust myself looking at the pictures of the ones I want and comparing them to whats in the lfs or online. I am definitely not trusting the lfs guy or the online shop to properly id them. These shrimp look too similar in most instances to get a good id by the average Joe. Even if Joe lfs was correct did the shrimp read the book and know its not supposed to go after the corals that look kinda like aiptasia? And that lps are not the vending machines shrimp and crabs seem to think they are?
