Ive always tried to have the largest sump I could on smaller tanks I've had, but moving to a 225, it's hard to find a large sump without custom made. I was looking at the Rubbermaid tubs, but not in love with those.

I was watching an American Reef Central YouTube video interviewing Sanjay Josh and he said he doesn't believe in running a lot of water through a huge sump. Looks like on his 500g tank, he maybe had a 40 gallon sump.

Is that why I'm having trouble even finding a big enough sump? You don't really need much more than a 40-50 gallon sump even at 500g?

Depends what equipment you plan to run. If you are going to want a good sized skimmer, pumps, refugium, etc. you need more space. Most importantly, you need it to hold enough water that when the power goes out and all that equipment seeks level in the sump, it doesn’t overflow.

Personally, I favor as large a sump as possible but if you aren’t asking a small sump to do too much, you’ll be fine...

I plan either the 20" synergy reef overflow or two of the eshopps overflows. I'm not sure yet how much those overflows drain when the power goes out.

I'll check out the big trigger

How much they drain will be dependent on how big your return pump is. The more GPM return the higher the water line will be on the teeth. I believe those teeth are 2" so just plan on a max of 2" water drain from your display. More realistically 1-1.5"

You can figure out the gallonage from your dimensions

Almost looks to pretty to use,,lol
There's nothing pretty about that smell that skimmer produces on a open stand with 25 fish!! It gets halfway full and I gotta dump it. That is unless it's chili for dinner, then it's a great cover. Don't look at me.. maybe the skimmer is getting full....lol

i think it is up to you, but Sanjay is referring to turn over rate/contact time, not need for water volume. most ppl have a 120 or smaller, so thats is why they probably produce sumps in the sizes they come. You can always buy a used larger tank and convert by just adding baffles and removing the overflow box if it has one.

Get some lightweight baseboard or panel boards, something, attach quality magnets to them and to that stand frame. It will give you panels to cover that sump and cut down on noise and smell all in one. Unless you don't mind seeing, hearing amd smelling it. Simple DIY and easy to remove when needed. Just what Id do if I had a kick butt setup like that.
