Drained down my tank, plucked out all the fish, stretched them out nose to tail ....... 345.5678 inches of fish in 356.789 net gallons of display water after measuring actual displacement. So I'm at slightly below an inch of fish per gallon. I then applied a 'girth' factor (a fatter 4" fish has a higher contribution than a skinny one) of 3*pie to get 1.5 inches per gallon. OK, now what .....?

How many inches of fish does everyone have per gallon of water? This seems to be a common debate, and I would like to see what everyone runs.

The answer depends on a lot more than inches per gallon. If you have one 5 inch fish in a 100 gallon aquarium with no flow/no oxygenation/no filtration it might be too much - depending on how much you're feeding. On the other hand you could have 20 or more x that depending on your system. This is an old and no longer used measure (IMHO). So - take it this way as well - is a 4 inch pipefish the same as a 4 inch trigger?

@Gator0930, meet the R2R information police. Classic R2R scenario: Original poster polls the R2R community for information about everyone's tanks, and then the R2R community condemns the original poster for the poll because they feel the information hold no value.

Except the poll doesn't have an answer for the conventional wisdom - which is 'It depends'. If I put up a poll and said 'what size shark is reef safe - and the choices were 5 inches, 10 inches 15 inches or 20 inches?' and everyone said - No size is reef safe would you criticize the poll or the person that answered the poll?:)

I have roughly 7" in my biocube 14g. 3 clowns and a hi fin goby. But that's probably also why my phosphates are high. But corals are growing like crazy. :D

No rule is mentioned in the poll question, and whether such a rule has value is irrelevant to the poll question. The poll question asks about a ratio within your tank. Cheers.

You're correct. But IMHO so are the people that criticize the way the poll was written. The goal here (I thought) was to obtain meaningful results to a group of people. I just re-read the poll - and realized the OP also asked about Display tank volume only. When someone puts up a poll - it might be helpful for that person to explain what information he/she wants to receive as compared to a question alone. Because - and this is no offense to the OP - if someone has a 50 gallon tank with 75 ''Inches of fish' - but they have a 200 gallon sump and refugium in the basement - it surely has a bearing on the validity of the question (which as most people have stated doesn't make sense in any case)

I don’t find much use for “inches per gallon”.

When my stock list is complete, I will have approximately 80” in a 108 gallon tank. That’s full grown size, and I am stocking with juveniles.

I have no fish over 4” fully grown, and am stocking with bottom dwellers, open water, cave dwellers, etc.

All community, peaceful fish. So far I have 18 fish. I will be adding 4-6 more.
About to purchase a reefer 525 and curious to know your fish list! I have 11 on my fish wish list about 46.5" total full grown.

I have the same tank - you can see a picture in the signature. Currently - I have a copper band butterfly (5 inches) - a purple tang (5 inches) 2 yellow tangs (4 inches) a large harlequin tusk (about 6 inches) - a small filefish - and a neon dotty back (3 inches). I would strong recommend a mesh cover on your reefer FWIW
