We've looked at alkalinity and calcium the last two days, so let's finish it off with Magnesium. At what level do you keep your magnesium?

Shigshwa,
Are you using the Salinity salt mix?

That's correct. I've had good results with it. I rarely ever do water changes, so all I need is a simple salt that puts my water chemistry in the middle of the ballpark, 9 dKH, 420 Cal, 1350 Mag, and I make adjustments from there.

Thanks for your time.
I used it for about a year when it first came out and it was a solid mix. It always came into Seachem's specs on the buckets.
My local reef shop just kept jacking up the price on it and you can't buy it online.

Lol,
Water changing ole school ;Oldman junkie over here :)

I was just going to post this exact poll only to see it has already been done with a lot of votes. Albeit, w/data that's a couple years old.

I've heard of people keeping their mag levels higher because some LPS does better with higher mag. I'm personally keeping my mag higher >1400 to try to get my dead marco rocks covered with coralline faster.

Curious if this data is still accurate 5 years later or if people target different levels now so I'm reviving this thread!

Mine sits right about 1580. Just what the latest batch(new batch of 200G boxes with the new plastic bags) of IO is mixing up to.

Back in the day we used to use Kent Tech M to raise MAG levels upwards of 1600 to combat bryopsis. They changed the formula in Tech M, and whatever they took out, no longer kills bryopsis.

Only down side to high mag that I have ever saw or read about, is snails tend to get sluggish until mag levels are lowered.

More than 50% keep it above 1350, which is the highest recommended level. Why?
I use Red sea coral pro salt, magnesium sits consistent around 1400- 1440. Weekly 10% waterchange, never dosed for magnesium.

I also use the Red Sea Coral Pro salt and my magnesium is at 1410 with the new Hanna checker that was corrected. I tried the older one ( Hanna Canada replace my unit + 1x reagents) and it was at 1370 on that unit.

I use the exact same sample for C1 for both and then C2 again.

I'll continue to do more test with both unit and see if it's always a +40 ppm to consider if ever you had the first version of the checker.
