My Long Spine Puffer (Tragulichthys jaculiferus) has its skin coming off its spines and then turning brown. It started off as a lump which then popped. he has another lump forming on its other spine below the already popped one. Does anyone know why this is happening and how to treat it?

Sorry - I’ve never kept that species. The only time I’ve seen something similar in Diodons was from mechanical damage; other fish picking at the spines, or net damage.

Is there anything I could do to help the healing process or should I just wait it out?

Generally, external marine bacteria are gram negative. You could dose with NeomycIn in a treatment tank, but capturing it and putting it in a small tank just adds to the stress.

Are you sure other fish aren’t biting at it?

Is there algae growing on the exposed spine? I’ve seen that before, not sure how serious it can be, but I think it slows healing.

Could be caused by an injury as @Jay Hemdal eluded to. This can turn into a bacterial infection so water quality must be optimum. Not sure what Jay would recommend as a preventative.

Bacterial infection is my suspect issue as they are often susceptible to such. Seachem Kanaplex or Ruby rally Pro would be recommended treatment in quarantine system

I think my lunare wrasse might be attacking it. It quite possibly be algae on the spine as I’m having a cyano and diatoms out break.
