Hi,
I added my hippo tang into my DT after 3 weeks in Cupramine quarantine.
About a week after adding him I saw these black dots forming on him.
Understanding that this is black ich, I did the following dosing schedule in my main display tank that is pretty much only fish with some inverts and 2 pieces on choral.

Dosed full prazipro on November 14th.
Did water change and redosed 6 days later on the 20th.
Black dots were gone.

I noticed black dots coming back on Friday night the 25th so I dosed again.

This time I wanted to be tougher, so I dosed 3.5 days later on the 29th morning, and again 3.5 days later on Friday the 2nd.
Everything was clear from the 25th until now on the 5th. I just noticed 2 new dots.
I Just dosed the DT again.

Am I doing something wrong?
Or can it be that it’s just not black ich..

hes eating normally, and not flashing.
(I may see him scratch once every couple days. But definitely no regular scratching. And ive spent a lot of time watching him)

and no other fish seem to have this issue. So I’m not sure if it’s just a hippo thing that I should ignore.

im hoping todays dose is the last one..

It takes praziquantel 2-3 days to actively start working and you broke the 8 day cycle too soon. proper treatment is :
One initial dose for an 8 day period
On Day 9 - water change
One more Dosage for 8 day coverage and done. Then add carbon back in if used or desired

Thanks so much for your response!

so All the threads I read on here (as well the bottle) said that prazipro is only really active for 24-48 hours in the water and then it starts to dissipate.
The suggested was 1 dose, then a second dose 5-7 days later.
And with more stubborn pests you do up to every 3 days.

Prazi stays in aquarium water for only a day or so before it is degraded by bacteria. The more often you treat it, the more bacteria grows and the faster it removes the prazi. After about 5 treatments, prazi will no longer work in that tank.

The timing to remove flukes hatching from eggs still in the tank is a bit of a guess. I tend to go with 8 or 9 days between treatments.

Here is the thing about using prazi to treat turbellarians (black ich). There are two species of worm, at least one of them is not controlled by prazi. Prazi just works on trematode flukes and tapeworms. Also, prazi doesn't kill the worms, it just makes them fall off the fish, and then they cannot reattach. Turbellarians live in the fish's skin, so do not fall off.

So assuming it’s the Paravortex Turbellarians, what’s the treatment options?
Would copper work?
Or will they die or on their own at some point

and lastly, does that mean I can put the skimmer back on after 24 hours since last dose?
Because it’s been off the last few weeks through treatments, and the water is getting pretty dirty.. I want to clean things up

Formalin dips work, copper won’t. In most cases, they are self limiting and will go away on their own in time. I have never had a fish die from turbellarians. I’ve heard reports from other people that have, but I always wonder did they die from the worms or just died with the worms, but from something else?

Thank you so much!!
That makes sense..
Before I saw your response here I was working on getting my copper quarantine tank back in order to move him over.
But he was just in copper for 3 weeks before putting it in the DT so now that all makes sense..

I’ll look for formalin in the meantime, but seems like I shouldn’t panic anymore at this point..

thanks!
