Today is the day 1 year ago I had my infamous electrical fire. I lost over $50k of the highest end collector corals, many fish and had some equipment damaged/fried. Absolutely everything I had livestock wise. A intense renovation over part of my house. Majority of my equipment was plugged into my apex but I had a heavy duty good surge protector ($50-$70) with only 3 things plugged in catch on fire. We still never got a solid answer on exactly what went wrong other then the insurance company told us it malfunctioned. So please regularly check your equipment and if it’s getting older just replace it with a fresh one. It’s not worth losing your corals and fish. Many people would have gotten out after that, but for me I eat sleep breath reefing and farming high end corals. Years of hard work to lose but to only build back stronger. If you have a crash for any reason I strongly suggest rebuilding even stronger!

Now for just few pictures of my collection I’ve rebuilt.

Completely off and shouldn’t be asking such a personal question.
How did you turn this claim into your insurance company, like total value? I mean, you can’t provide receipts for coral?

Im sorry this happened too you!
Hopefully this will be the year where everything turns around!

Heck, I’m curious how a high school/college kid had $50k+ in corals plus more in equipment. What kind of summer job did you have? Lol Curious because I’m 37 with a good job and some nice stuff, but starting to think I need a career change!

Corals get larger, price only goes up! Plus you can frag to make a very nice profit margin.
Compare you coral to online prices and it starts to add up fast!

Well to start the damages to the house was straight and clean on our house insurance, when it happened we were concerned that it could be like jewelry, there is only a $3k limit if not specific in your insurance. Our agent came back and said it would be covered which for many people I know who know people that have had tank fires in which coral and fish was never covered so we got lucky there. We did have to present receipts and invoices for most which I did have many invoices from PayPal and if bought from a online vendor I went back and looked up the order number and receipt that way. For my trades as I love to trade with other collectors and vendors and for my cash buys I.E frag swaps they were pretty understanding as I had so much and I had to write down every coral, name, where I bought it and price I paid. I also showed them gallon bags full of plugs and skeletons as well as boxes full of larger corals such as acros and torch and hammer skeletons.

Buy and sell, I shipped out 16 boxes this week. Even though everything I make I put back in for equipment and building my new 550 gallon system.

That makes sense. Crazy how much you had to provide but for insurance, I know they want everything possible.

Lucky you had insurance! How much did they pay up in the end?
