Can you explain what VSV actually stands for? I know you are dosing multiple carbon sources, but can you let us know what they are (vinegar/vodka)? Do you dose Microbacter7 or another bacteria?

If you want multiple, I'd go with lyretails. Subtle, but beautiful fish.
If you want a single, borbonius or sunburst are my picks. Borbonius is kinda alien looking, I want one. Ben has (had?) a real nice one in his nem tank.

Ordered some stuff today actually.
Anthias is next.
Looking for some real nice exotic ones!

Any recommendations ??????????????

-Andre
I have seven Scribbled Anthias - love them and not aggressive with each other. I'm not sure if they are considered particularly exotic though.

Lovely tank. You were going to discuss VSV - I've read the entire thread and didn't spot it?

@griff500 , @Denali08 , ugh.................. VSV Carbon dosing is quite complex to explain.
I have done some prework and explanation on this subject.

I know I owe you guys more info on it, coming soon promise ;-)

VSV (Vinegar, Sugar, Vodka), For maintenance dosing of bacteria I use Biodigest ampules weekly.
Also I use now SIPORAX as well as a host for the bacteria and reduced VSV amount.
More about this then later.

If you want some great fish that stand out we need to talk.
Borb's are awesome fish as long you keep just one or if you can find a pair do that.
I ordered two from Michael @NYAquatic and they did ffine for six months but after that the female became a B***H.
Move one in the 202 Diesel tank and kept the larger one in the 60 nem cube.
Settle for a Gem and a Interruptus, they will become focal points in your reef.
I need to put pics up again on my build thread from the Neo 202 Diesel tank

Here is a pic that Tony Vargas took when he was in Houston to see my system.

I was more interested in your previous comments about using it with UV, but some details about your use of carbon dosing will be of interest as well.

Thanks Ben, will look into this deeper shortly.
Do you recommend to add a variety of Anthias all at the same time?

I have none at the minute since I drifted so deep into the Coral care, were ignoring the beauty of fish for a long time ;-)

Got ya. Well check my earlier post about the need of UV in a Reef tank. The answer is between the lines.
The UV kills the undesired bacteria and bacterial diseases in reef tanks. Well many people forget that Carbon dosing also drives "bad" bacteria, not just the "good" ones.
On the other hand, a sudden bacteria bloom, you can avoid via UV and it may safe your tank one day.

Where do you keep the siporax in your sump? Hi flow, low flow, reactor ?

Keep it in the sump. Completely submerged, with the water column flowing and passing above the media.
Do not have it installed like in a trickle filter, too much oxygenated water then for effective denitrification.
I did not stack it, just poured it into the sump.
Also I keep socks in the first chamber of the sump system. Running sockless permanent did not turn out that well in my case, ORP dropped to far !
So the flow is considerable low.

Timelapse%201_zpslwcon2bp.jpg

Logbook 2016-01-05 22:51 H-Town Reeftime

Took a cellphone picture of the WD Acro, and verified via time lapse.

Left picture 12-18 vs. 01-05 (Growth duration about 2,5 weeks)

Seems the PSX Reef Juice (Rev.H) is working this time.
Colors are improving with the latest mixture very well.
Side effects noticed : Excessive growth !!!!

Follow up with daily dosing now for another week.

Here another good quality picture with the Canon as of today of the WD:

So you are just using standard VSV and not particularly concerned about UV killing sufficient levels of desirable bacteria for it to be an issue. In other words, you perhaps view the negative effects of UV as being somewhat overstated?

Not really, running the UV on a separate pump and water stream back into the tank, the other pump will distribute bacteria between sump and tank.
On the other hand, desired heterotrophic bacteria do populate much faster as you can kill them completely with UV, while dosing carbon.
So not running a huge oversized unit in my opinion will not be harmful.
As a matter of fact, most Pro reefer that do use Carbon dosing have a UV running either UV 24/7 or at least partially running over the day.
Important is of course to occasionally to reseed bacteria strains with the appropriate products from time to time.
A good healthy balance is important. Also you would notice when you start killing the good bacteria in your tank.
Bear in mind, most of the good bacteria in the tank reside on the substrate and not in the water column, that unfortunately also applies to some real bad bacteria.

Cheers. Given that, as you say, the majority of bacteria are attached to something, while the UV gets some of the things in the water column, it does seem odd to worry about the effects of UV on the bacterial system.
