I am looking to jump into an 60x26x24 tank at the end of this month. I am looking at this setup / price just for pumps with mostly SPS dominate tank. Would anyone consider this too much?

Wavemaker
- MP60wQD - 2 (700 per pump)1400
- MP40wQD - 4 (370 per pump)1480

To make it easier on the budget, I thought of starting with 2 - MP60WQD and 2 MP40WQD initially and add the other 2 MP40WQD (on the back of the tank) over time.

Thoughts?

I'd go with the 2+2 on MP40s whenever budget allows. That way you can put the extra two on the back glass or higher/lower on the sides as needed. 60's are very strong but you're going to have less origin points for your flow.

Thanks for prompt response. Can you clarify what you mean by "60's are very strong but you're going to have less origin points for your flow "? Do you mean there would be less placement options?

Less placement options? Perhaps depending on coral growth or aquascaping choices. I mean if there are 2 MP60's flow is only coming from two locations. If you have 4 MP40s you can have flow coming from each corner, or two from the back and two from the sides, etc. It just means you have more variance you can introduce into the tank over time.

I would go with 4 x MP40 because it allows you to create more ramdom flow and you can more easily change and customize flow with 4 x MP40s. I have a few MP60s and I can't place corals within 12" of it. I do have an 8' tank so I do need to turn the MP60 near the max.

Thickness of your tank is also important. If you have a thicker tank (>0.5"), you might need to go with an MP60 though.

Thank you. Just updated my plan starting with 4 MP40WQD instead.

My tank is 62x30x24h and I had the following configurations of pumps (also sps dominant tank)

3x mp40qd + 1 mp60qd - 2 mp40s on left + 1mp40 and 1 mp60 on the right, flow was ok, but I wasn't happy with it.. I felt like if if my mini colonies/frags started to grow out the flow would not be enough... (pumps were set at 70-80%)

I ended up with the following setup
1 tunze stream 3 in the back left shooting across the back part of the tank (it's a bulky pump but it was behind the rock so it's almost invisible), 2 mp40s on left and 1 mp60 on the right. This is more than enough flow. I had to turn down all my pumps down to around 40% to prevent a sandstorm..

So the moral of the story is more lower flow pumps are better than fewer higher flow pumps, right?
